iMac with 27″ Retina 5k Display Released
Apple released the first iMac with an ultra-high resolution Retina display today. The Retina model includes a 27″ display with a whopping 5120 x 2880 pixel resolution, which Apple is calling a Retina 5K display.
The iMac with Retina display is backed by some powerful internal hardware as well, with the entry level model including a quad core 3.5GHz Core i5 CPU, able to be configured at up to 4GHz Core i7 CPU. The entry level model ships with 8GB of RAM, with a 16GB and 32GB upgrade available (either of the latter two would be recommended for best results). All Retina iMacs come standard with a 1TB fusion drive.
Of course, driving such an ultra high resolution display requires some significant graphics power, and the Retina iMac ships with a AMD Radeon R9 M290X with 2GB of VRAM by default, but can be upgraded to up the AMD Radeon R9 M295X with 4GB of RAM if desired.
Pricing for the entry level Retina 5K iMac starts at $2499, and is available to ship today from the Apple Store. Customizing the Retina iMac extends the shipping time by a few days.
Separately, the Mac Mini was also updated today with minor changes to the hardware components, including faster processors. The Mac Mini continues to start at $499 for the basic model.
The new iMac and Mac Mini will both ship with OS X Yosemite pre-installed, which is now available as a free download for Macs capable of running the new release.
Apple also announced updated iPads today, which feature improved hardware and the inclusion of Touch ID.
how about a copy of that wallpaper?
WOW! now we can enjoy the worst interface in Mac history at ultra high resolution.
Thank you Johnny Ive!
I would like one but it is still using a i7 processor. I have a 3.4ghz i7 27inch iMac as it is with 32 gigs of ram. Yeah it could be a bit faster and thiner but not worth the upgrade cost for just the screen resolution.
I like that wallpaper.
Wow I want one. Well spec’d costs about 5k too!! iMac retina wahoooooo!
Kudos to Apple for using K = 1024 when referring to the number of horizontal pixels (5120) as 5K! Many TV manufacturers are wrongly using “4K” to refer to screens with 3840 horizontal pixels, in which case K = 960.
Looks really great, but 8GB RAM? What is that?
Hope it’s not soldered on, get 32GB for a display that size! Looks like a great Mac, can’t wait to see reviews.
This is upgradability since there is back door.
The RAM has nothing to do with the display. The display card has 2 or 4GB of VRAM.
8GB of RAM is nothing to sneeze at. My current Mac has 8GB. My first Mac came with 8MB!
