Apple beta system software

Users who participate in the beta programs for iOS, Mac OS X, tvOS, and watchOS will find new beta builds available for their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple TV hardware.

iOS 9.3.3 beta 3, OS X 10.11.6 beta 3, and tvOS 9.2.2 beta 3 are all available to download now on devices that are opted in to receive beta updates. The beta updates can be obtained through the Software Update mechanism or through the developer center. As usual, beta versions of system software are not intended for a broad audience or for casual use.

No new features are expected in the minor point release updates, which are likely focused on resolving issues and bugs with current system software releases for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV devices.

Something to emphasize are that these beta builds of point release software updates are notably different from the other major Apple beta software programs that coexist right now. While both beta builds, the beta versions of iOS 10, MacOS Sierra 10.12, and WatchOS 3, and tvOS 10 which are available concurrently are the next major versions of system software for Apple hardware, whereas the aforementioned point releases are small updates. Point release updates are generally aimed at minor bug fixes with occasional small feature adjustments, whereas major version releases tend to include new features and significant overhauls of functionality.

Typically Apple goes through a variety of beta versions of point release software before releasing it as a public version, thus it would be reasonable to expect OS X 10.11.6, iOS 9.3.3, and tvOS 9.2.2 to be released sometime in the summer. Meanwhile, macOS Sierra 10.12, iOS 10, tvOS 10, and watchOS 3 are set for wide public release in the fall.

Actually I tested Sierra and it’s completely unusable. As for El Capitan 10.11.6 Beta 2-3 are for me rock stable and highly reliable. This last update for Beta 3 was just 672mb meaning they’re close to a last build phase for El Capitan.

I agree, I don’t think Sierra is usable for most people right now.

I disagree. I’m using it on 3 production machines and am having no issues.

Now I’m not doing video production or anything – merely business work, but I have had very few issues – just typical beta bugs – no showstoppers whatsoever.

I would be surprised if anyone was even running these versions, everyone on a beta is surely on iOS 10 and Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra.

If you’re going to have buggy software, may as well have the new features!
