Download iOS Updates Once for Installing on Multiple Devices

May 9, 2012 - 4 Comments

Download a Single IPSW File for Upgrading Multiple Devices

If you have several iPhones, iPads, or iPods that need updating to the latest version of iOS, you can use a nice trick to save some bandwidth and download a single iOS update file to apply to multiple devices from either Mac OS X or Windows. This is a perfect solution for a family that has multiple iPhones or iPads that need updating, particularly when you don’t want to download the same firmware multiple times.

To be clear, the iOS devices must be of the same type and model, meaning three different iPhone 4s can use the same firmware, but an iPhone 4 can’t use the same update file as an iPad 2 would, and an iPod touch can’t use an iPhone 4S update file, and so on. Same models use the same IPSW, different models need different IPSW.

How to Use a Single IPSW File with Multiple iOS Devices

To do this, you will need to download the iOS firmware files directly from Apple. Here are firmware links for iPad, iPod touch, iPhone if needed, once you have the file you place them into the folder where IPSW files are stored locally. Here’s the process for Mac OS X and Windows, and yes you can use an IPSW file downloaded on a Mac or PC to update an iOS device connected to a different PC or Mac, the files are platform agnostic.

For Mac OS X:

  1. Quit iTunes
  2. Hit Command+Shift+G to bring up “Go To Folder” and enter the following path, depending on your iOS device:
  3. ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates
    ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates

  4. Drag and drop the downloaded IPSW file into the appropriate location
  5. Launch iTunes and connect the iOS devices to the computer to initiate the upgrade

For Windows:

  1. Quit iTunes
  2. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the following directory, depending on the iOS device and version of Windows:
  3. Windows XP:
    \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
    Windows Vista & Windows 7:
    \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

  4. Move the IPSW file into the appropriate Software Updates directory
  5. Relaunch iTunes and connect the iOS device to the PC

That’s all there is to it, and here’s how it works; anyone can download the updates without iTunes by using direct firmware links from Apple’s servers. Once you have the firmware file you can either use the standard method of using .ipsw files with ALT/Option clicking Restore, or use the approach outlined above which fools the computer into thinking it downloaded the iOS update itself, which will then immediately unpack and start the iOS upgrade process upon the launch of iTunes.

Don’t forget about OTA updates either, which allow iOS to download and update only the changes between releases. The resulting OTA update can often be 1/12 the size of a full firmware file, and although they can’t be shared between multiple devices the small size of the on-device update can make it a valid choice for the bandwidth conscious.

iOS 4.3.4 Update Released (Direct Download Links)

iOS 4.3.4 Update

iOS 4.3.4 update has been released by Apple, the update is aimed at patching the PDF vulnerability in iOS 4.3.3 that allowed JailbreakMe 3 to work from a web browser. Because of this, if you used a jailbreak like JailbreakMe 3, do not upgrade to iOS 4.3.4 or you will lose your jailbreak. Users who are not dependent on jailbreaking should upgrade to iOS 4.3.4 because it patches security holes.

The update has been pushed out for all iOS 4.3 compatible hardware, in addition to a special version of iOS 4.2.9 for iPhone 4 CDMA users. You can download the update directly from iTunes, or you can use the direct download links below to obtain IPSW files per device.

Launch iTunes with your iOS device connected and you will be notified of an available software update. If that doesn’t work, or you’d rather have an iOS 4.3.2 IPSW file, you can use these direct download links:

This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

• Fixes an occasional graphics glitch on iPod touch (4th generation)
• Resolves bugs related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks
• Fixes image flicker when using Apple Digital AV Adapter with some TVs
• Resolves an issue authenticating with some enterprise web services

If iTunes doesn’t automatically notify you, you can download iOS 4.3.1 by attaching your iOS device to iTunes and then checking for software updates within the app. If you’d rather download iOS 4.3.1 IPSW directly, you can do that too using the links below.

Noticeably absent is iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 4 CDMA. Regarding iPad 2,2 and 2,3, if you own one of those devices and you are directly downloading IPSW, you probably know what you’re doing and know which is for Verizon and which is for AT&T, but I don’t have access to that hardware to confirm either at the moment.

Note for those on Windows: these are .IPSW files, if your browser is saving them as .zip or any other archive, you need to rename the file to .ipsw for iTunes to be able to use the firmware. This is not an issue that affects Mac OS X users.

How to Download iOS Updates Without iTunes

Dec 9, 2010 - 22 Comments

download ios without itunes You can download any iOS software updates for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch without using iTunes. There are actually two ways to do this, the first is using the iOS device itself but there are caveats and limitations with that, and then there is the traditional method of downloading the update files directly from Apple without iTunes, which is particularly helpful for those who rely on download managers or who are just encountering trouble with iTunes automatic updates. We will cover both, starting with the easiest method of using the device itself.

Download iOS Updates Directly to the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Thanks to OTA (standing for Over The Air) updates, you can also download updates to iOS directly on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch without even using iTunes. There is a caveat here though, and that is the device must be running system software later than version iOS 5.0, so older hardware may be left out. In any case, if you are running iOS 5 or later, you can use OTA to update iOS with no attachment to a computer or PC whatsoever. You can d

  • Tap on “Settings” and tap on “General”
  • Tap on “Software Update” to see if any update is available for the over the air download

If an update is available, tapping on Download and Install will finish the process for you with no attachment to a computer and no iTunes at all. Very nice!

Download iOS Updates Without iTunes

You can always download iOS IPSW files without iTunes, and then update the software using iTunes itself. Select your iOS hardware to get a complete list of iOS updates for that device:

Note that you will still need to use iTunes to install the iOS update on your hardware.

The iOS update file has downloaded, now what?

Once you have downloaded the IPSW file that corresponds with your iOS device:

  • Launch iTunes
  • Option+Click (Mac OS X) or Shift+Click (Windows) the Update button
  • Select the IPSW update file you just downloaded
  • Let iTunes update your hardware to the latest version

That’s all there is to it. This is often a more reliable way to get an iOS update immediately, sometimes iTunes will time out during the download when an iOS update has just been released, this is probably due to server overload. Frankly, it’s often faster to just download the update files directly from Apple since they are delivered through a CDN they tend to go at or near your maximum download speeds.

On a side note, if you attempted to download an iOS update from within iTunes and it failed, you may want to trash the file it downloaded. You can do this by going to the IPSW file location and just deleting the file. Sometimes this alone can resolve iOS download problems too.

Dec 8, 2010 - 6 Comments

ipsw file location Anytime you update your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you will get a new IPSW file that is downloaded to an iOS updates folder courtesy of iTunes. Knowing where these files are located can be helpful when troubleshooting and when accessing an IPSW for downgrade or jailbreak purposes. You can access these directly at the following locations:

IPSW location in Mac OS X

For Mac OS X, the location of your IPSW files may vary slightly depending on the iOS device in question, but they will be located in your home directory:

~/Library/iTunes/

Once you are inside this folder, look for the device you are using to lead you to that devices IPSW download, for example an iPhone would store it’s iOS updates here:

~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

Older versions of Mac OS X may store the data here: ~/Library/Application Support/iTunes/ in some variation of of iPod or iPhone firmware.
