Update 6/5/2011: Apple has announced Mac OS X Lion release date is set for July, will cost $29.99, and is available as a download from the Mac App Store.

We were given a sneak peak at Mac OS X 10.7 Lion today, and Steve Jobs provided a release date: Summer of 2011. The Mac App Store (we called it!) will be available sooner, in just 90 days. FaceTime for Mac beta will be available to download immediately.

Well, I’ve tried the Lion and like it, it has some features that I think are great, Like the launch pad, which gives you quick access to your Applications. they cut Front Row which is a bummer, basically there are only a few things that has changed, GUI changes are what they are, just giving it a more user friendly touch, I like the changes but that’s because I’m a Microsoft person … LOL

Any updates on the release of OS X Lion? I can’t wait anymore. I totally dig “versions”, going to help me a lot with writing my university essays.

Do you guys know if Apple will eventually release Lion on a DVD or something? It’s going to really suck if I have to download the OS twice (once for my laptop and once for my iMac) – that’s a bad move imho.

Hey guys just a heads up look for it on Wednesday July 20th. I got a weird feeling. lol. Can’t say where I work???

No DVD release unless it’s a new computer purchase eventually but the good thing is one time purchase from app store then you can download it to any other compatible apples with your apple I’d.

  5. Andrewa says:

Would you buy a new MAC now or wait until June 6 announcement? I worry that buying now is buying into obsolescence but the store tells me OS upgrades, including Snow Leopard to Lion are easy and cheap. What are the downsides of buying the old OS weeks or months before the new Lion is released.

  6. kaz says:

I have tiger..I think (before leopard).,…will I be able to upgrade to lion.. I had been thinking of upgrading to snow leopard but I might as well wait. And will it be a simple install can anyone tell me. Cheers!

Just check the box, you will see ‘requirements’ and compare that to your mac (Apple icon top menu – about this mac)

    • Macsupporter says:

Yes it’s confirmed you will have to have the Mac app store (10.6) to be able to install os x lion (10.7)… You may have 10.4 then you would do a complete full install from a Mac OS X snow leopard retail box set.

  17. Jaws says:

I agree with Peter. I would rather upgrade to snow leopard where glitches are already fixed than buy lion which will have a lot of glitches and just wait awhile until they are all solved before upgrading again. Plus snow leopard is only $30! I am trying to convince my boss to update my work imac.

    • 101StAbn. says:

Snow Leopard still has many problems.
My #1. Gripe with Snow Leopard is that it DOES NOT seem to like or recognize many models of external cd/dvd burners, so if your super drive is not working this is a real kick in the @$$. Other than that I guess its ok, I still prefer 10.5.8

      • Dan says:

Heh, i do not have any cliches with mine, Snow Leopard runs great on my iMac, plus using an external cd/dvd burner so i cannot see Snow Leopard having many problems. Looking forward to 10.7 Lion :)

  18. Peter says:

Anyone who has a mac with an Intel processor SHOULD be running snow Leopard. Why wait for Lion? Snow Leopard is Leopard optimised for Intel, why risk new technology when Snow Leopard is proven technology that works!!???

  19. Mark says:

Personally, I own 17 Macs. 2 are intel, and the rest are PowerPC. Any G4s I have run Leopard, regardless of processor speed. My i7 early 2011 MBP runs 10.6.6, but I always use my Titanium 1GHz 15″ G4 because the new MBP seems to be getting heavier every day…

I have leopard and never upgraded to snow leopard i will just wait for lion.

  21. Aaron says:

@Chris Are you really upset that Apple keeps improving and upgrading their stuff? I can’t see how that is a bad thing. Being left behind is up to you dude. Buy a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors, they will always be good.

  22. flamefangahs says:

Wow Chris… 10.3.9 was at LEAST 5 or 6 years ago. Tiger (10.4) had a good 4 years by itself! That computer of yours must be a G3 or a G4 PPC. Get yourself to Apple and get a much needed upgrade. You have no idea just how limited you are in regards to your computer’s potential! I bought a Macbook Pro (2010) and it’s 10,000 times better than my PPC box ever thought about being.

Actually, now that I think about it… it was 7 or 8 because the eMac (2005) was RELEASED with 10.4.7. That’s a good 2 years after Tiger was released. (eMac is my PPC box)

  23. Chris says:

im still using 10.3.9….Im so frustrated that mac keeps upgrading software..guess i get left behind!

    • Ryan says:

The updates usually are not that expensive. 10.6 was $40 as an upgrade. If you keep up with the updates and pay for the upgrades its generally cheaper than waiting and skipping a version and paying full price for the full version.

    • James camerun says:

I did pre-order snow-leopard when it came.. Lots of programs wasnt compatible from the old leopard.. That sucked… But i think you miss some great futures staying behind.!
