Activate Unlocked iPhone 3GS and 3G to Fix Ultrasn0w Battery Drain Issue

Dec 3, 2010 - 11 Comments

You can use a new tool to activate your unlocked iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G, which in turn resolves the battery drain issue that has occurred on some iPhones unlocked with ultrasn0w. You’ll need redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 6 which was released specifically for this purpose, this allows you to ‘hacktivate’ your iPhone 3GS/3G by installing a new Cydia tool called SAM.

Activate iPhone 3GS & 3G to Fix Battery Drain

You should be familiar with redsn0w jailbreaks and Cydia, the goal is to jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.2.1 on the iPhone 3GS & 3G and then install the SAM tool which enables you to activate the iPhone and relieve the battery drain problem.

  • Launch Cydia and add the following source: http://repo.bingner.com
  • Search for and install SAM and SAMPrefs to your iPhone from that repository
  • Now download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Mac or Windows
  • Launch redsn0w and proceed as usual, but be sure and click the checkbox next to “Deactivate”, this allows the newly installed SAM to function

  • After SAM installation and using redsn0w with deactivate, tap on “Settings” and then SAM, and then tap to “De-activate iPhone”
  • Now launch iTunes and let it activate your iPhone
  • If iTunes tells you “Invalid SIM” when you try to activate, you just need to manually select your carrier

The reason the battery was draining with ultrasn0w prior to this SAM tool is because the iPhone was constantly sending out activation attempts, thanks to SAM this no longer happens and you will get a large boost in battery life, plus you can re-enable push notifications (which some people disabled as a temporary solution to the problem).

My battery started draining within 4 hours in December 2010. I only used it every hour just to check the battery life. After it would die, it would take up to 2.5 hours to come back on after I plugged it into the charger. Three more phones at my office started having the same problem with 3 weeks. I backed my phone up last night and reset it, wiping everything clean like I just bought it. This morning I still had a full battery. So we figure one of the aps must me draining the battery. I am going to try installing them one at a time to see if I can figure out which one is the culprit.

SAM is not working for me. I cannot get passed the “invalid SIM” to activate my iphone. How can I activate my iphone to let SAM work? It doesn’t read “Wildcard activated”, instead it simply reads “Unactivated”. I do not have the original SIM card it came with.
My battery used to last 30-40 hours, now I can’t even make it through an 8 hour work day! Can someone help me!

Using Redsn0w 0.9.6b8 currently, battery seem stable and preserved. Work really well untettered on GreenPois0n RC5. Does anyone knows when the Redsn0w 0.9.7 will be out? there is still problem with GPS, bluetooth, Skype. Thanks.

This SAM works very well in stopping battery drain for me on 0.9.6b6. I don’t know if I should update it to Redsn0w 0.9.6b8, because I don’t know if the battery will continue to be preserved on SAM. Does anyone know?

I tried this and my battery is still draining really quickly. Within 2 hours it goes from a full charge to 20%… Is there any other reason why my phone whould be draining so quickly… it wasnt doing this when it was jailbroken/unlocked on 3.2.1.

    • Big daddy says:

it would probably be draining because you either play to many games or u have ur brightness on for too long like just leaving your phone somewhere with it on and the brightness all the way up

I’ve unlocked a few phones with the new ultrasn0w now and the results are mixed, some batteries drain and some don’t. I think it’s mostly dependent on the carrier, but I’m glad there is a simple fix. DevTeam works quick as usual.
