The idea of the iPod touch and iPhone as a popular gaming device looks to be solidified considering that iOS hardware is on the most popular Christmas gift wish lists for kids this year. ArsTechnica pointed out a report earlier in the week that the iPod touch is outselling both the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, which makes it clear that iOS is going to become the dominant mobile gaming platform:
According to a new report by research firm Interpret, mobile phones are now responsible for about 44 percent of handheld gaming, up 53 percent over the last year. Use of a DS or PSP is down 13 percent over the same time period.
Ars later cites an analyst who makes an economic case for the success of iOS as a gaming platform, while the DS, PSP, and iPod touch are similar price points, the price structure of games are quite different; “Why would you pay $20 for Tetris when you can get it for $6.99 or $3.99 on iPod Touch?”
You’ll notice that the app distribution is different on the iPad however, with productivity apps taking a large piece of the popular pie:

I would guess why games are slightly less popular on the iPad is due to the higher price tag. Starting at $499, the iPad is naturally put into more adults hands, but thats’s not to suggest kids don’t want iPads since they are #3 on the Holiday wish lists this year.
Can you please help me get older versions of apps on my iPod 4.2.1? Please Heeeeeeeeelp!!!!!!!
