3D Graphics on the iPad 2, No Glasses Required

Apr 11, 2011 - 11 Comments

This video may provide a good look at how 3D graphics will first make an appearance on the iPad and iPhone. The best part? No funky glasses are required.

When first watching the video, I assumed it was based on the accelerometer like some 3d jailbreak UI tweaks, but instead it’s tracking movement with the iPad 2’s front facing camera. The video and 3D demo was created by the EHCI Research Group at Grenoble Informatics Laboratory, who further describes the technology:

We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.

It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.

Could we see this type of 3D technology used in upcoming iOS apps and games?

Just tried this out. It definitely does work, but it puts a huge strain on your eyes, since you’re subconsciously over-working them.
My eyes are aching, and I’m somebody that plays too much video games (1,000+ hours on CS:GO) up close to my monitor (always in the dark; let’s me focus on the screen and nothing else) sometimes for over 10 hours straight.
So if I got eye strain after using the app for about 5-10 minutes, I’m sure that it will be unbearable to those who barely look at screens.

Seeing as this is going to become an addition to the new 3DS system, I can see (no pun intended) how painful prolonged gameplay will be. In fact, I think it will be the only time that people actually listen to the ‘Take a break every 30 minutes of playing’ suggestion/warning. One huge problem I find with this technology is how heavily it relies on lighting conditions. As I mentioned above, I prefer playing games in the dark, and at night, I’ll play my 3DS while in bed waiting for my sleeping pills to kick in.

Other than that, it’s amazing. Truthfully I thought it was going to be a a huge gimmick, but it works way better than I had expected it to. It’s also still super new technology, (well, the use of face-tracking for 3D application, anyway) so anybody that is disappointed by its functionality, should try to keep in mind that it’s new, and not mastered.

You need to get a life. 10+ ours a day playing video games? Playing video games while in bed waiting for sleeping pills to kick in? Man, you need some serious help. Maybe you should think of getting a job or maybe going to college to get an education that will keep you gainfully employed. Or, if you are working, maybe start playing some sports, like softball, golf, bowling or whatever so you can get some interaction with other humans, and maybe learn about life from them.

  2. […] you remember the goggle-free 3D graphics iPad 2 demo video? If you don’t, no worries the video is embedded below, but in short, a research team came up […]

This is not 3D, it’s an animated visual effect! Very different from the 3DS or in the cinema where a different image is created for each eye. Still pretty cool though…

Better than that big ass glasses on your nose

Sure it is the next logical step – if it works as the NDS won’t be fun in terms of battery (3-4h !?!?)and in terms of picture size …
The NDS is fun but only for a few seconds after you see that it makes the small display size even smaller (logically) and the size is a just a corner of an iPad. So for an iPhone/ipod it’s as well a short fun and will reduce battery life a lot – for the iPad it’ll be worth looking into ;-) (In all ways and angle’s)

    Go ahead

I could imagine this used in games very soon, impressive software response to the Nintendo 3DS threat

Nintendo 3DS, threat? you’re a joke seriously xD Nintendo 3DS isn’t a threat moron, it’s the future of games. :P

banter on if you will but, 3D is only just the beginning, and there will be no end to it. Other Companies will probably be using this more too. Sony has already developed their own 3D Enabled TV’s and is on the markets. Look it up.
