Sort Notifications in iOS by Time of Arrival
If you get a ton of alerts or use the iOS Notification Center as a queuing system, sorting them by most recent event is preferential to grouping them by app. This makes it so you can quickly scan Notifications on iPad and iPhone by what came in most recently, rather than by what application the notification came from.
How to Set Notifications to Sort by Recency & Date in iOS
Here’s how to sort notifications based on their time of arrival:
- Open “Settings” and tap on “Notifications”
- Under “Sort By” tap on “Recent” or “By Time” (wording depends in iOS release)
This option is available in all versions of iOS regardless of what it looks like:
Pull down Notification Center from the clock in iOS and you’ll see the new grouping arrangement, where items will be mixed together in accordance to their occurrence, rather than by app.
You can do a similar trick on the Mac with notification center sorting by time as well

Mine seem to be grouped by app regardless of what I choose. Anyone else seeing that?
I noticed the same thing before I updated to 5.0.1
Mine are grouping by app based on time of arrival, I am starting to think the option doesn’t do anything.
