Sweet Mac setup of a Director of Software Platforms

This weeks awesome Mac setup comes to us from John K., the Director of Software Platforms for an R&D firm. The workstation is primarily used for software development for a wide variety of platforms, including iOS, Windows 7, Ubuntu, CentOS, and Open Solaris, the latter four of which run in VMWare on the Macs. Hardware shown includes:

  • iMac 27″ (mid-2011) 2.7GHz Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 1TB SATA HD, running OS X 10.8
  • Thunderbolt 27″ Display connected to the iMac
  • MacBook Pro 15″ (late 2008) 2.9GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, 480GB SSD, running OS X 10.8
  • iPad 3 64GB with iOS 5.1.1 in a Crux360 keyboard case
  • Apple Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Wireless Keyboard

The MacBook Pro looks like it’s resting on an mStand , and if you haven’t seen the Crux iPad case before it basically turns the iPad into a tiny laptop, providing both a Bluetooth keyboard and full protection for the iPad that folds like a clam.

I am curious if he uses the keyboard and touchpad for both devices and if so, how he controls which bluetooth radio is being used without conflict of the other device. Otherwise the macbook looks like it is not usable on that stand

Today must be complaint day on the internet, every one of your commenters is whining about something.

Great workstation, similar to my own and I would recommend it to anyone!

Seems like this sort of setups is just getting rather trendy. I mean, you see the same sort of setup from one user profiled to the next.

And I agree with some, that I think sharing what and how and why you use what you use may enhance these.

I can imagine there’s software testing on various hardware involved but how or why is a dual monitor needed, etc.

    Cool series though. Thanks!

    • John K says:

Dual Monitors provide greater productivity especially when at a glance you need to watch several things simultaneously. I love to setup different spaces (Mission Control) for different functionality such as mail/IM clients, IDEs, different VMs, etc.
Hotkeys and swipes to quickly move to different desktops (which can get busy at times)

    Bluetooth Keyboard with number pad?
I heared about some solutions but they are all made out of plastic and feel very cheep. Wich is this one?

  5. Steve says:

These posts are kind of silly. Rather than showcasing the products, why not go into a little more detail about how each product is used, and why this person chose to buy this equipment other than to make a pretty picture with every product arranged just so?

    • Steffen says:

Totally agree! Product placement for showing off!? Tell us about your daily workflow involving each of the components.

      Steve –

Very good question. The iMac is my primary development platform and Office tool while at my desk. The iPad is what I take to meetings. I use Evernote, mail, and calendar on the iPad. I use dropbox allot to sync across devices. The Crux360 is great for typing notes or emails at meetings.

The MBP is my road warrior machine. It too has multiple VMs so I can do pretty much the same as my iMac

Wow. YES I do like this one. Great background wall paper too.
