How to Resize Photos on iPhone & iPad with the Free Image Size App

Are you looking to resize your photos captured on iPhone or iPad, and make them smaller in size? This may be necessary if you want to upload images to a site where there’s a size limit or you want to fit your image into a certain space on a web page. As complicated as this may sound, you can get this done pretty easily on your iPhone or iPad with a free third party app.
Unlike cropping where you remove a portion of the image to achieve a certain aspect ratio, resizing aims to reduce the size of the image by scaling the number of pixels in it. For an example, resizing a photo could change the resolution from 4000×5000 pixels to 1200×1600 pixels. Nowadays, the photos you take on your iPhone and iPad are huge in size due to the sheer resolution of the image. As a result of this, you may run to image size limits that are set by certain websites or messaging services, and you may be unable to upload your photo. In such a situation, you’ll need to resize the image and reduce the file size.
Don’t fret if you haven’t resized any images before, because we’re here to help you learn how you can resize photos using your iPhone and iPad with the help of an app.
How to Resize Photos on iPhone & iPad Easily with a Third Party App
Since iOS/iPadOS doesn’t natively offer image resizing* in the Photos app, we’ll be making use of a third-party app to get the job done. Here’s what you need to do:
- First, download the Image Size app that’s available for free on the App Store. Once installed, launch the app on your device.

- Now, tap on the photo icon at the top-left to select the image that you want to resize.

- This will bring up the Photos library within the app. Select the photo that you want to work on.

- Once selected, tap on “Choose” located at the bottom-right as shown in the screenshot below.

- Now, you’ll be able to see the current resolution of the image right below the photo icon. You’ll need to enter the resolution values for width and height of the image in the respective boxes. By default, the values are set to 1080 x 1080, but keep in mind that if the scaled resolution values don’t match the aspect ratio of the original image, the final image may be cropped accordingly.

- When you’re done, you’ll be able to see the resized image as a preview. The file size of the output image will be indicated right below the preview. Simply tap on the download icon at the bottom-left corner to save the resized image.

- When you see the following message in the app, you can exit it and head over to the Photos app to grab the resized image.

There you go. Now, you know how easy it is to resize images using your iOS/iPadOS device.
From now on, whenever you’re restricted from uploading your images due to the size or resolution, you can simply rescale them using this app and then upload without any problems.
Although iOS and iPadOS don’t natively feature an image resizing tool, there’s a trick that you can use to resize images without an app, if needed. Open the Mail app and try to send a large image file to your own email address. Upon clicking send, if the Mail app finds that the image is too large, you’ll get the option to resize it to small, medium, or large.
Additionally, you can make use of the built-in Shortcuts app to resize images. Of course, creating a new shortcut from scratch would be quite a complicated process for many users, but you can install this third-party shortcut on your iPhone or iPad and start using it right away. Just make sure to set your device to allow installation of untrusted shortcuts first.
* There is one method of resizing images available directly on iPhone and iPad, and it’s using a workaround through the Mail app, but that’s admittedly not an ideal solution.
We hope you were able to resize some large images and reduce the file size by scaling down the number of pixels. Are you planning on using this third-party app in the long-term or are you contemplating using a shortcut to get this done instead?
