Play Warcraft 2 on MacOS with Chonkcraft

Continuing on our journey through retro classic computing experiences, here’s another fun one reborn for retro gamers in the modern MacOS era: Chonkcraft.
Remember Warcraft 2, the award-winning classic real-time strategy game from Blizzard circa 1995? You’d play as Orcs or Humans, build a village and an army, and then command that army through battles as you takeover a map. You could play the Human or Orc campaign, or, in what were often absolute riots of entertainment and chaos, against your friends online in 4v4 matchups, making it one of the earliest popular online PvP RTS games. Warcraft 2 was a big hit for both classic Mac and PC, and it’s easy to see why. Perhaps you have wished you could play Warcraft 2 on your modern Mac with Apple Silicon and modern MacOS, only to find out that Blizzard does not offer this, and there’s a whole host of hoops to jump through to get it running through emulators… but not anymore, thanks to Chonkcraft!
Chonkcraft is a modern Warcraft II game engine that plays the original game media files, preparing the artwork and audio for you, and ready to play the classic game with one simple launcher on your modern Mac or PC.
Chonkcraft is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, as a free download.
To successfully play Warcraft 2, you will need the original game files to load into Chonkcraft, either as a CD or disk image (ISO, DMG, bin, cue, etc) from either the Mac or Windows version, so if you have those laying around in an archive closet somewhere now is the time to dust them off. You can also find the CD images available to download from Internet Archive but that could be a grey area that is above my pay grade to understand or explain, so please only do that after you have checked your local laws and if you owned the original game anyway.
On first launch you’ll want to select your Warcraft II pack files to load, which will be imported into Chonkcraft, and soon you’ll be ready to play:

Once the game is running, you’ll be ready to play Warcraft 2:

I’ve been playing Chonkcraft Warcraft II for a few weeks now in MacOS 27 Golden Gate and it works great, so if you long for those classic real-time strategy experiences that are no longer supported officially on modern MacOS versions, Chonkcraft is here for you:

Warcraft 2 via Chonkcraft supports single player campaigns for both Orc and Human, expansion campaigns, single player map play, and multiplayer online play by direct IP connections (one player hosts, other players point their client to the host IP).
Relive those massive old school RTS battles in all their chaos and amusement, check out this gameplay video from the developer:

Chonkcraft is easily my favorite modern retro flashback gaming experience, perhaps because I was also a huge fan of the original Warcraft 2 game in the mid 1990s. But it turns out, the game aged incredibly well, and it remains just as fun and playable today as it was then!
Chonkcraft comes from the same developer who built Dialtone, the fully functional AOL clone, another cool retro project that if you’re a regular reader you might have already seen.
A huge shoutout to Chonkcraft developer Chris Kearney (@siliconforested on X) for this cool project. You can find us on X too @osxdaily if you’d like.
