Screen Unknown Senders on Messages for iPhone can result in lost messages but here is how you can change that

The Unknown Senders Messages screening feature of iPhone can be really useful if you find yourself getting bombarded with frequent unwanted messages from unknown contacts, but it can also be a hindrance and cause you to miss some messages you may want to receive. If you find yourself missing messages due to the message screening feature for Unknown Senders, you can turn off the feature on iPhone.

There are many reasons to turn this feature off, but a few common reasons are you are giving your phone number out to new people, you are selling something on FaceBook Marketplace or Craigslist and are not seeing the incoming messages about your thing for sale, or you’re just missing messages from people who are not saved into your contacts. Whatever the reason, read along and you’ll have Screen Unknown Senders disabled in moments.

How to Turn Off Screen Unknown Senders for Messages on iPhone

Disabling the message screening feature is simple for both iOS on iPhone and iPadOS on iPad:

  1. Open the “Settings” app
  2. Go to “Apps” and then to “Messages”
  3. Locate the setting for “Screen Unknown Senders” and toggle that OFF to disable the unknown message screening feature
  4. Disable Unknown Senders Messages Screening on iPhone

Future messages from unknown senders will now just appear in your regular Messages inbox on iPhone (or iPad).

If you had previously enabled this feature and found yourself missing any messages that were important, which is often the case, this is a good setting to reconsider.

You might think that turning off messages screening can result in an increase in junk messages arriving, and while that can occasionally be true, Apple is getting much better at automatically screening junk iMessages, and don’t forget that you can report messages as spam if one does come through.

Oh and if you decide to keep Screen Unknown Senders enabled, or turn it back on down the road, don’t forget that you can move Unknown Senders back to your main Messages on iPhone or iPad pretty easily.

Another way to manage noisy messages that you don’t want to outright vanish into the “Unknown Senders” category, is to use the muting messages conversations feature with a swipe, which is really handy for silencing any chat that you don’t want interrupting you.

What do you think of the Screen Unknown Messages feature on iPhone and iPad, do you use it and like it, or do you find yourself missing important messages because the feature is enabled? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!
