How to Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 with Redsn0w

Jailbreak iOS 6.0.1 with Redsn0w

Jailbreakers will be pleased to discover that iOS 6.0.1 can already be jailbroken by using existing versions of Redsn0w. Currently, only the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th gen, and iPhone 3GS are supported, and you’ll have to point Redsn0w at the older 6.0 IPSW, but otherwise the process is pretty much the same as any other recent tethered jailbreak. The simple walkthrough below guides you through the process, but the Redsn0w app itself also is fairly explanatory these days.

Before beginning, it’s a good idea to perform a manual backup, this lets you easily undo the jailbreak without losing anything. Use iCloud to backup manually or go the traditional route with iTunes, but don’t skip this step.

  • Update to iOS 6.0.1 if you haven’t done so yet, use OTA, iTunes, or with the 6.0.1 IPSW
  • Get the latest version of redsn0w (Mac OS X) (Windows)
  • Get a local copy of iOS 6 IPSW for your device
  • Launch Redsn0w, click “Extras”, then “Select IPSW”, and choose the iOS 6.0 IPSW file you just downloaded, then go back to the main Redsn0w screen and choose “Jailbreak”
  • Follow on screen instructions to enter DFU mode by holding the Power button for 3 seconds, then while holding Power also hold the Home button for 5 seconds, finally release Power button but hold home button for another 15 seconds, Redsn0w will notify you when DFU has been successful
  • Be sure to check auto boot in Redsn0w to automatically boot the device tethered upon restart, if you missed that step go to the primary redsn0w window and select “Extras” followed by “Just Boot” to boot tethered

When iOS reboots you should find Cydia on the home screen, signifying the jailbreak was successful. If you don’t see it or it doesn’t launch, you probably didn’t boot tethered, which is required. The whole tethering thing is the primary downside to these types of jailbreaks, as you’ll need to connect it to a computer with Redsnow each time the device reboots or runs out of battery.

If you decide to undo the jailbreak, just connect the iPhone or iPod touch to the computer and choose Restore, selecting the most recent backup stored locally or within iTunes.

I have locked iphone 4S with OS 6.0.1 with carrier BELL from Canada. I tried to JB with RedSn0w but it just does not recognise the 6.0.1 ipsw file when I select Extra and goto the directory where I have downloaded the Zip file. Please help on how I will be able to select the ipsw file as none of the files in file has any file with ext. .ipsw

    • sfg132 says:

Hi, if ppl are seeing a zip/rar/etc file when they download an ipsw, it is because IE puts it in that format so you have to manually rename the extension to .ipsw rather than .zip or .rar whatever. Then Redsn0w will recognise the file.

  17. Jon says:

I’ve gone through all the steps here for using redsnow, and I’ve also tried the sn0wbreeze jailbreak for ios 6.0.1, and both have worked until I try to open cydia, at which point the app automatically closes itself on both jailbreaks. Safari also closes as soon as it’s opened. other apps including the app store still function as they should, but cydia and safari are no longer working… I’m currently running ios 6.0.1 on a 4th gen ipod touch. Any ideas??

  20. David says:

thanks! for days i have been trying to figure out what was wrong because i would try to jailbreak it and everything was normal then redsn0w just kept saying waiting for reboot.

    • Maad Gamer says:

If you are refering to the waiting for reboot after uploading stage 2 then you Might be using the wrong firmware… I posted this above

Make sure you are using the correct firmware. If you have an AT&T iPhone 4 there is iphone3,1 for older models and iphone3,2 for newer models. I have two iPhone 4 and each use different firmware. I had the same exact issue until I did this.

I have RedSn0w 0.9.15b3 and my Iphone 4 is updated to 6.0.1 Inside of redsn0w i am using just the regular 6.0 IPSW I also have it set to run in compatability mode with windows service pack 3 and to run as an administrator. I have followed the directions as closely as possible on how to put my phone in DFU mode making sure to hold the HOME button all of the way through the updating list 1 step. I can also put my phone into DFU mode without pressing the next button, however no matter what i try and do, I still get the exploit failed error. Anyone here know what I am doing wrong?

the redsnow not supported the ipsw

    • Maad Gamer says:

Try different USB ports or another computer. Redsn0w does support your device and iOS. My wife’s computer does this from certain USB ports, specifically the USB 3 ports… I am not sure if this is an issue on other machines but the USB 2 ports on her machine do not give me this error.

Okay so after much trouble with the tethered reboot side of this process, i have found a way to tethered reboot with no rubbish unplugging etc.

    use RedSn0w 0.9.15 b1 for tethered rebooting.
    (not 0.9.15b3)

this works for me using iphone 4,

obviously jailbreak using 0.9.15 b3 and the ios 6.0 ipsw

that should work for those with the same troubles as myself :)

    • Purple Rockies says:

Thanks, Paul. Reverting back to 0.9.15 b1 worked for me. I swear I was on the verge of giving up. I seriously have spent hours trying to figure this out so you’ve been a BIG help.

  36. Wiktor says:

    1. exit redsnow unplug device

  54. Devon says:

P.s: After the jailbreak whenever I try to “Just Boot” it gives me an error saying “Missing keys.plist”..

  55. Devon says:

I’ve tried this on my iPod Touch 4G using the latest Redsn0w (0.9.15b3) and it doesn’t work.

I opened up redsn0w > selected the 6.0 ipsw file > went back & clicked on jailbreak > followed the usual instructions. It showed all the matrix-like text falling down the screen (that’s normal), but when it got to the part where it says “moving applications” it only stayed there for about 5 – 6 seconds and then it rebooted. It said that it was done on Redsn0w but when the iPod was rebooted I didn’t see Cydia.

I did update to 6.0.1 and backed up everything before.

    • jdkimbro says:

Basically the same thing is happening to me. I select the 6.0 ipsw file, and when it gets to the point that I should see “Moving Applications” the phone just boots with the apple logo.

  58. Michael E says:

Redsn0w says 6.0.1 ipsw is not supported. WTF?
    6.0 works fine.

    • Pablo says:

      I have the same problem..

      We need help please..

      • Juan Arenas says:

        The answer is:

        Go to Program Files>Common Files,
        then select Apple.
Then open the folder Apple Application Support.
After that search for a file called “SQLite3.dll” and copy that file.
Finally paste that file in the carpet where you have de Redsn0w program and the other text files you have downloaded. It will make the A5 error go away and make it work.

If it helped please share. lml

        • Kostas says:

iPhone 5 & iPhone 4S Owners still waiting here for the untethered jailbreak 6.0.1 !!
Come on we need another Absinthe!!
Why they can’t jailbreak it anymore?
Why does Apple complain and makes it harder to Jailbreak??
    I don’t understand.

I want these to be native then i don’t need jailbreaking:
    – Activator
    – Omnistat Free Up Ram / Turn things individually on/off / Reboot, Respring / Kill All Background Apps
    – Wee Slider
    – FlashLock
    – Brightness Activator Actions
    – Wifi Analyzer
    – Blacklist
    – Full Screen for Safari
    – SB Rotator
    – Springtomize

That’s why i need the Jailbreak.

    • Darkromanst says:

    • Matt says:

iPhone 4S is not supported yet:

Article should be clarified since a lot of people skim I think

      • Brian says:

unfortunately even with the newest version of redsnow it keeps saying that my iPhone 3gs has missing keys… wtf???

        • Tito says:

how do you change to 6.0

          • Josh says:

I followed the instructions perfectly for my 3GS. On the screen of my 3GS it goes through all the steps like it’s jailbreaking. But then the phone starts back up 10 minutes later with no cydia. And it can turn on/off by itself so it’s definitely not jailbroken…

        • Abe says:

Make sure you download IPWS file i had same problem
