Quickly Zoom In & Out of Maps with a Tap

Quickly zoom out in Maps on iOS with a tap

Surely everyone with an iOS device knows that Maps can be zoomed out by using a two-finger pinch gesture, and zoomed in by using a two-finger spread gesture, and repeating either gesture will continue to zoom the screen in or out as desired.

While the gestures are pretty quick, you can zoom in or out much faster by just using screen taps:

  • Zoom out by using a two-finger single tap on the active Maps screen
  • Zoom in by using a one finger double tap on the active map

The result of the taps are an immediate jump to a lower or higher zoom level, similar to what you’d experience on a desktop when clicking on the zoom in/out button in Google Maps on the web. Because of how Apple Maps handles location detail by zoom levels, don’t be surprised if you end up using these taps constantly, and remember that the detail level can be improved quite a bit by making a simple change to the Maps font size.

It’s worth mentioning that these one-finger and two-finger taps for zooming in and out are pretty much universal across apps in iOS, and you’ll get just as much use out of them in Mail, Safari, and your other favorite iPad and iPhone apps as you do in the Maps app.

It’s sucks that you can’t zoom out with one finger. When in the car you stuck using just one finger.

Haha, can’t stop laughing at HerpDerp….

Herpies, your an idiot. I’m using safari and a single tap with one finger doesn’t zoom in, nor does it work in maps. If I double tap with one finger it zooms in, and then zooms you back out if u double tap again (with one finger) This is false information, and should be rewritten.

    • HerpDerp says:

No, you’re an idiot because I AM DOING THIS RIGHT NOW in Safari, in Mail, and in MAPS – just like the article says.

“If I double tap with one finger it zooms in, and then zooms you back out if u double tap again”

That’s exactly what it says you dolt.

You keep proving how dumb you really are.
        Copied from article:
“Zoom out by using a two-finger single tap on the active Maps screen
Zoom in by using a one finger single tap on the active map

THIS IS NOT CORRECT. tapping only once in maps or safari doesn’t zoom in. (you have to double tap). Also it’s worth noting that using a single tap with two fingers doesn’t zoom out from safari. (only works in maps)

Do you know how to read? Take a few hours and read the article again, then try and tell me I’m wrong. You are digging yourself deeper into a hole of stupidity. The article needs to be rewritten, and you need to go back to school.

Hey Jon, thanks for catching the typo! You’re right, a one-fingered double tap is required to zoom in, and a two-finger single-tap is required to zoom out.

  4. Jon says:

This is wrong. Check your info before you post. It’s a double tap with one finger, and it only works in maps, it’s not universal. Thanks for the useless info.

    • HerpDerp says:

Really? Because I’m making this comment from Safari and I’m using it right now to zoom and out. Maybe you should check your info before you make a clueless comment.

how do you change antenna display like that?

  6. Frizlab says:

It’s a double tap with one finger to zoom in ;)
