More Ports

Port options are more robust on the redesigned MacBook Pro, with the port configuration shown below:

The port configuration is the same on the 14″ and 16″ models.

Display Notch

A display notch is visible on both the 14″ and 16″ displays, similar to the notch seen at the top of modern iPhone devices. The notch houses the 1080p camera, and appears to impede into the menu bar of macOS. The notch is not particularly visible in most of the marketing materials on the Apple website, but can be seen clearly in the images below.

MacBook Pro LED Display PWM?

One lingering question about the new MacBook Pro models pertains to the mini-LED display, and to what extent PWM screen flicker will play a factor for users who are sensitive to the flickering that is inherent with LED screens. OLED PWM can be quite bothersome to some iPhone and iPad users, causing headaches, nausea, and eyestrain, so hopefully this is not an issue with the new MacBook Pro displays.

Full Sized Keyboard

The Touch Bar has been removed in lieu of a full sized keyboard, function row, escape key, and Touch ID.

The enclosure design is slightly thicker than before, and appears to be inspired by the 2008-2013 series MacBook Pro, or perhaps the titanium PowerBook of yesteryear.

Very sad they not even spent a Kensington lock. But I guess it’s well thought of Apple to resell stolen MBs!

And then instead of putting the cleaning cloth with every $2000-5000 MB they charge $25 for a c50 peace of cloth. Oh well…

Ordered my top-of-the-line replacement for my top-of-the-line 15″ mid 2015 last night. Shipping is expected for 11/18–11/26.

Is it more than I need right now? Yes. Was what it’s replacing more than I needed then? Yes. Is it what I have now enough? No.

  5. JohnIL says:

Way too much Mac for what I do. But I am glad to see a solid performance per watt increase and the added port selection was desperately needed. Not so much a fan of the notch but what can you do? People seem to demand thinner bezels so where do you put the camera and sensors? Pro people should be mostly happy with these configuration options.

  6. Fred the Head says:

The insufferable notch kills the deal.

    • Tao Yun says:

The notch is a curious design decision and I think it is very ugly. It is certainly not necessary, many PC laptops have slimmer bezels with integrated cameras, and no notch. Same with Android phones whereas iPhone has the notch.

In China they call the iPhone Notch “bangs” like the hairstyle, LOL!
