tvOS 17 for Apple TV

Apple has released tvOS 17 for Apple TV users. The latest Apple TV software update is available to download and install now for any compatible Apple TV device.

tvOS 17 includes some great new features, including the ability to make FaceTime calls with Apple TV by using the camera on an iPhone or iPad that is running iOS 17 or iPadOS 17. Additionally, there’s a nifty Split View option that allows you to FaceTime on a split screen with a TV show or other media playing on the other side of the screen, allowing for SharePlay experiences. tvOS 17 also includes Apple Music Sing, which is a karaoke feature for Apple TV, that also can use the iPhone/iPad camera to add filters to yourself as you sing your masterpieces. tvOS 17 also includes a redesigned Control Center, and other various small features and changes.

Separately, Apple has also released iOS 17 for iPhone, iPadOS 17 for iPad, and watchOS 10 for Apple Watch.

Apple TV models compatible with tvOS 17

tvOS 17 is compatible with the following Apple TV models; Apple TV HD (2015 model), and all models of Apple TV 4K, including Apple TV 4K 1st gen, Apple TV 4K 2nd gen, and Apple TV 4K 3rd gen.

How to Install tvOS 17 on Apple TV

Updating tvOS is simple:

  1. Open the “Settings” app on Apple TV
  2. Go to “System”
  3. Choose “Software Update” and choose to install tvOS 17

tvOS 17 will download and install onto the Apple TV, and the device will automatically restart to finish installation.

Most Apple TV models are also set to auto-update by default, so if you do nothing but leave your Apple TV on then tvOS 17 will install on its own eventually.

Remember, the main new feature of tvOS 17 that allows FaceTime calls on Apple TV requires an iPhone running iOS 17 or an iPad running iPadOS 17 so that Apple TV can use those devices camera for video calls.

Additionally, HomePod and HomePod mini also have an update for version 17 of their system software. Those devices will update on their own, or you can update manually by going through the Home app on a related iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
