Google Notifier - Gmail alerts in your menubar
Mac OS X, OS X Apps, Utilities
Gmail is arguably the best web based mail client, featuring a clean no nonsense interface and a monstrously large mailbox size hovering right under 3gb currently, you really never have to delete emails ever again. Google Notifier brings Gmail to your Mac’s desktop by putting a convenient icon in the menu bar that alerts you to new mail messages, and like Gmail, it is unobtrusive and simple. The icon is red if you have new mail, gray if you don’t. It’s a small and free download and makes a great desktop addition for Mac Gmail users.
Google Notifier also brings with it a calender notifier, I don’t care to use it but thankfully it’s easily turned off and won’t harass you again. Here is what Google Notifier will look like in your menu bar:

I’ve been using this for a while now on my iMac and I love it.

The preferences for Google Notifer are pretty limited, but lickily there is a hidden settings editor that you can bring up by holding Command and Option while clicking on preferences in the menu.
In the box that comes up you can type different things to change the number of unread items to display in the menu and create filters for what mail you will be notified about.
