Apple has just released iOS 4.2 beta 3 for download at the iOS Dev Center. The latest beta version of iOS 4.2 works for iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 4g, iPod touch 3g, and iPod touch 2g. Alongside the iOS 4.2 beta 3 is the newly released Xcode and iOS SDK (Mac only) as well as iTunes 10.1 beta 2 (Mac/Windows).

Head over to Apple.com: iOS Dev Center with your developer login to grab the latest versions of the iOS software.

The final version of iOS 4.2 is slated for release in November. The devices listed above will all be supported, but nobody looks forward to the update more than iPad owners, since this will be the first version of iOS 4 for iPad that will bring multitasking, folders, and much more to the device.

Is it true that anyone can install the iOS beta as long as you can download the ipsw and dmg?

I have an iPad and I don’t really want to wait any longer for features that I should have had for 5 months.

I would not recommend that approach. You must have an Apple Developer account to download and install the software legally.

Technically if you come across an ipsw file you could probably install it but you would not be able to register. Remember that iOS 4.2 is coming to the iPad in final release in just a few weeks as a free download.
