watchOS 3

Apple has released the final version of watchOS 3 for Apple Watch users. WatchOS 3 boosts performance significantly, and also includes various new features, new watch faces, new complications, and a rethought Glance screen which is now called a Dock.

Multiple new health features are included with watchOS 3, including a “breathe” app which reminds the user to be mindful, activity sharing, and an all new emergency SOS feature which lets you hold the devices side button to dial 911 (or the local emergency number) and simultaneously sends an SOS message to a designated emergency contact.

There’s also a nice new feature for Mac users who own Apple Watch which allows Mac users to unlock their Mac running macOS Sierra simply by wearing their Apple Watch.

How to Update to WatchOS 3 on Apple Watch

watchOS 3 is compatible with all Apple Watch models. Updating WatchOS software is accomplished with the following steps:

  1. Be sure the paired iPhone is updated to iOS 10
  2. Connect the Apple Watch to the charger, it needs at least a 50% charge and to be connected to wi-fi
  3. Open the Watch app on iPhone and go to “My Watch”
  4. Choose “General” and then “Software Update” and select ‘Download and Install’

Downloading and updating to watchOS 3 can take a while, so be prepared to rest your Apple Watch for a while and let the process complete.

Separately, Apple has released iOS 10 update and tvOS 10 update, as well as a software update for iTunes.

I upgraded my Apple Watch to 3.0 and it’s working great, but it’s a long upgrade process. My upgrade took 2 hours to download, install, and restore settings.
