How to enter Recovery Mode on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone XS Max, iPhone X

Sometimes an iPhone must be placed into Recovery Mode to be able to effectively troubleshoot the device. Usually this is only necessary when an iPhone XS, XR, XS Max or X is stuck on the  Apple logo for an extended amount of time and does not boot, is stuck on the iTunes logo with a USB cable, or if the computer is not recognizing the iPhone. When in Recovery Mode, the iPhone XS, XR, XS Max, or X can be restored directly with iTunes or macOS Finder (for Catalina and later).

The instructions for putting an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone X into recovery mode as detailed here are different from prior iPhone models. If you have an older iPhone, then follow the instructions for putting older iPhone models into Recovery Mode instead.

To effectively use Recovery Mode with iPhone you will need a USB cable and a computer with the latest version of iTunes, or MacOS Catalina or later. Update iTunes before attempting to use Recovery Mode. Additionally, you will want to make sure that a backup of the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone X is available before starting the process, as using recovery mode or attempting to restore without a backup can result in permanent data loss.

How to Enter Recovery Mode on iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X

Be certain that you have a backup of your iPhone before beginning. Failure to have an available backup may lead to permanent data loss from the iPhone.

  1. Connect the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone X to a computer with a USB cable
  2. Open iTunes on the computer (Mac or Windows, or in macOS Catalina open Finder)
  3. Press and release Volume Up on the iPhone
  4. Press and release Volume Down on the iPhone
  5. Press and continue holding the Power button until the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X is in recovery mode
  6. iTunes (or Finder) will show an alert stating an iPhone has been found in Recovery Mode

After the iPhone has entered into Recovery Mode, you can update the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X with the latest available iOS release, or restore with iTunes (or Finder) as usual either with a backup or by setting the device up as new.

An iPhone in recovery mode can also be restored by using IPSW if needed, as long as the IPSW file is actively being signed by Apple and matches the specific iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X model. You may find iOS IPSW files here for the latest iOS versions.

How to Exit Recovery Mode on iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X

Exiting Recovery Mode happens automatically once the iPhone is restored or updated, but you can also exit recovery mode without restoring by issuing a force reboot to the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X as follows:

  • Disconnect the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, X from the computer
  • Press and release the Volume Up button on iPhone
  • Press and release the Volume Down button on iPhone
  • Press and hold the Power button on iPhone, continue to hold until you see the  Apple logo appear on iPhone screen

Exiting Recovery Mode will return the iPhone to whatever the prior state was before it was placed into recovery mode in the first place. If the iPhone was stuck on the ‘connect to iTunes’ screen anyway, then it won’t boot back into the normal home screen or lock screen.

All other iPhone (and iPad) models can also enter into recovery mode is needed for troubleshooting purposes, but the steps to do so differ per device.

Additionally, DFU mode is available for when Recovery Mode is not working to restore a device. DFU mode is a lower level restore mechanism but is rarely needed.

I get the same thing when I get my iPhone to go into Recovery Mode on my laptop iTunes screen it says Go to iTunes Store or Log in to iTunes. I click on log in and at asks for a username (Apple ID) and password. Once I enter that it asks me for a 6 digit code and when I enter that nothing happens

Make sure you update iTunes to the latest available version on PC, on Mac you’ll want to install any software updates with Finder.

Hi the phone will not reboot still has a flashing apple on the screen

  3. Nyrif says:

Had to use this when iOS 14’s beta bricked my phone

  4. Lindsey says:

It doesn’t work. It doesn’t give me the final step with the iTunes screen, it just asks for a password and that’s all.

  5. Kage says:

This sucks. After going through the steps, my phone crashed and the battery exploded. thumbs down, oh wait, i don’t have thumbs anymore because my PHONE EXPLODED.

    • Paul says:

If you have an iPhone XS or XR and the battery exploded you should contact Apple right away, your iPhone is still under warranty and they will replace it and also want to know what happened with the battery they manufactured.

It’s very rare for that to happen in general, and it has nothing to do with a software process or Recovery Mode. Batteries typically explode from excessive heat exposure or being ruptured.

  6. Robert says:

This process does not work when using Catalina as once the phone goes into recovery mode neither iTunes nor the finder application will enable an active recovery status. The only pop up you get on the recovery mode is it will “restore” iCloud and not replace the firmware.

Anyone know an easier way to get on iOS 12 and then back it up from iTunes…

    • Avi says:

This process to enter into Recovery Mode on an iPhone XS, XR, XS Max, X absolutely works. You say so yourself, you are getting a pop-up saying that recovery mode has been detected and that it wants to restore with iCloud, that likely means that is your compatible backup. In other words, your iPhone has been put into recovery mode.

Entering Recovery Mode on an iPhone X-series phone is a series of steps undertaken on the phone itself, it has nothing to do with Catalina. Catalina and/or iTunes are used to restore the device, not to put the iPhone into recovery mode.

You are running beta system software, which is likely your problem.

Paul, while I don’t own one of these phones, I do appreciate the information you publish on your site–I’m sure for someone right now this is helpful and it’s great information to have available for some day in the future when I perhaps do have one of these phones and need to enter recovery mode. Keep up the great work!
