Limit Connection Bandwidth with SpeedLimit

speedlimit bandwidth limit cap

Do you need to limit your internet speed for testing? Maybe put a cap on your transfer and download speeds for simulation of slower connections? SpeedLimit is an open source project that allows you to do that.

Broadband internet really made the web what it is today, but if you’re a web or iphone developer it can be really useful to know how your application or website behaves at various bandwidth speeds.

SpeedLimit is a nice little system preference pane that allows you to set bandwidth limits to test different internet connection speeds, 768k DSL, Edge, 3G, and Dialup.

Of course if you wanted to play a prank on someone, you could install this app and set their bandwidth to dialup speeds for a painfully slow internet flashback to the 1990’s! But that wouldn’t be nice.

Check out SpeedLimit developer home if you’re interested in this.

Note you can also use Network Link Conditioner to simulate different internet speeds, which is part of Xcode.

Broadly speaking, you can also easily test internet connection speeds with a service like fast.com or other speed test apps.

Do you you need to limit and internet connection speed for some reason or another? Do you use this app or another utility?
