Apple is holding a media event on Wednesday, October 20 titled “Back to the Mac.” The details are as vague as usual, but the image sent out is causing loads of speculation thanks to a lion peeking out from behind an Apple logo. Maybe this will be our first look at Mac OS X 10.7? Maybe we’ll get new Macs? Maybe both? We’ll find out in a week!

Updates: Speculation around the web continues to suggest this will be the official unveiling/preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which must be codenamed Lion at this point, judging by the lion in the picture (we’re all Sherlock Holmes at this point).

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: Touch Support and iOS Integration?

The lion and Apple logo appear to be on a Magic Touchpad or similar surface (see below image), suggesting that Mac OS X 10.7 will have touch-features that have been speculated to exist with future incarnations of an iMac touch, MacBook touch, both with Mac OS X + iOS integration.

I wouldn’t be surprised if iOS took over for Dashboard as a feature-rich layer on top of Mac OS X.

Thoughts from around the Apple Web

  • LoopInsight confirms the event will include “a sneak peek of the next major version of Mac OS X.”
  • 9to5Mac emphasizes the touchpad appearance of the invite, then goes on to cite a quote from Steve Jobs about how multitouch will simplify “the process of controlling a computer.”
  • DaringFireball guesses we’ll see a new MacBook Air at the event
  • MacStories posts some hopes and predictions, including a Mac App Store, Finder revamp, touch interface, iOS integration, a 3G MacBook Air, amongst other ideas.
  • AppleInsider speculates on a preview of Mac OS X 10.7, a new MacBook Air, and the release of iWork and iLife ’11.
  • Several commenters speculate iLife ’11, iWork ’11, new MacBooks, and Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will be released or unveiled, making it a big day for the Mac platform

Maybe there’s something about “Back to the Future” because of the 25th anniversary. I don’t think Michael J. Fox will introduce a new iMac Touch, but the name of the event and the timing is good.

I’m not sure about the “Lion” stuff…
Lions are lazy, always look sort of scabby and let the lionesses do all the work. They hardly even fight. Are we expecting a slow, lazy OS where all the work is done on an iPad or something?

  6. candyer says:

If Microsoft was the one using a feline codename for Windows, then “Garfield” would be appropriate for how bloated it is.
PS: I have some other good APPS from aneesoft want to recommend. Maybe someone will like it.

everyone is failing to miss the other obvious cue here: the 3d logo rotating out of the surface, this is clearly a hint at a 3d gui where apple has had numerous patents

    • Jag says:

What you are saying is of interest to me. But the rotating logo seems to be nothing more than a clever way to partially reveal the lion lying beneath. Unfortunately.

  8. No Worries says:

Considering Apple’s close ties to Disney through Steve Jobs, I think we’ll see a Lion King theme: Mac OS X Lion King. Apple will replace the classic Mac boot chime sound with the “akuna matata” song and instead of a mouse we’ll all get little stuffed touch sensitive lions to use as a pointing device.

I’ve got $100 riding on this, don’t let me down Jobs!

    • Tokyojerry says:

I second the motion. Mac OS X Lion King seems reasonable and logical, but minimally, the Lion factor for sure.

  9. Vladington says:

Don’t know about this Jason, but surely the name of the Mac OS X will be “Golden Lion” or “Mighty Lion” ^^ or simply Lion.

  10. Jason says:

I think it will be a preview of 10.7 and iLife 11 will be released.

Anyone else think it’s weird Apple is hosting this on a Wednesday when they always release products on Tuesdays?

Mac OS X 10.7 + all new MacBooks + iOS integration

    done deal
