Dual Boot Android OS and iOS on iPhone 3G and iPhone 2G

dual boot android and ios iphone

If you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G or iPhone 2G, you can dual boot between Android OS 2.2.1 Froyo and iOS 3.1 to iOS 4.1. The installation really isn’t that difficult, especially if you already have a jailbroken iPhone (apparently it must be jailbroken with PwnageTool, redsn0w, or blackra1n, not quite sure why), it’s basically just a matter of downloading a few apps (Bootlace and OpeniBoot), and then installing Android onto the iPhone.

The following video walks you through the installation process, it’s pretty short and easy to follow, courtesy of RedmondPie:

Apparently Android runs reasonably well on the iPhone 3G, but some features don’t work, making this more of a cool hack than a practical installation at this point. If you don’t have an iPhone 3G or you just don’t want to deal with this hack, you can also run Android OS within a virtual machine on your Mac or PC, it’s a free download too and completely pain free.

Bootlace is on cydia via Bigboss. It has everything you need. Repo didn’t work for me either but I searched Bigboss & found Bootlace. I installed that & it has a option for installing OpeniBoot as well as iDroid.

Buckle up for a stupid question, me being very familiar with Apple’s iOS but completely unfamiliar with the Android platform. In the video, the gentleman mentioned that “some features didn’t work”. What are these features? Will basic things like calling and SMS work, and will you be able to connect to EDGE/3G or is this just a dummy hack?

    Thanks in advance.

Android is the opposite of a device specific platform.. it’s a totally open platform, it’s probably the easiest MobilOS out there to port to iPhone hardware. Furthermore, iOS and Android are built on linux so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get everything worked out.. and finally the iPhone 3G/3GS use the ARM Cortex A8 cores and it just so happens there is already an Android based tablet with this same core on the market, the Archos 5 Android… So Frankly… Google doesn’t need to a god damn thing.

OK this is such a cool idea, I would LOVE to be able to dual boot my phone the same way I dual boot my computer. Great concept.

But here’s the problem: Android fragmentation. Android is such a fragmented device specific platform that it’s going to take a large amount of hacking to get Android to function well on the iPhone and frankly without Google support I don’t think 100% functionality will come.
