iPad Air 3

Apple has announced updates to the iPad line, officially labeled as the iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3. All new models include faster processors and improved capabilities, Touch ID sensors, and while iPad Mini remains in the same enclosure, the iPad Air 2 has been redesigned to be slimmer than ever. Some of these features may not be much of a surprise given that Apple apparently unintentionally leaked some of the details yesterday through iTunes.

iPad Air 2, which is 18% thinner than the previous iPad Air, is available in three color options; silver, space grey, and gold. Specification-wise, iPad Air 2 features an A8X CPU, a faster processor that has also has improved graphics processing abilities. The new iPad will also include a motion co-processor, which, theoretically at least, would allow the iPad to track motion much like the iPhone can track movement. Additionally, the new iPad Air includes the same camera as that which comes with iPhone 6, including the ability to shoot burst mode, slow-motion video, and take time-lapse.

Pricing for the new iPad Air is the same as prior models, with a 16GB version starting at $499. The 32GB model has been dropped in favor of a 64GB model, similar to the new iPhone line. Models are available in up to 128GB.

iPad Mini 3 includes an A7 CPU, Touch ID, and starts at $399 for a 16GB model. Prior model iPad Minis are still available at reduced prices, but for users interested in buying, the latest models are typically recommended. New iPad Mini 3 devices are also available in the new Gold color option.

New iPad Air models also include an improved anti-glare display coating.

The new iPads will be available to pre-order on October 17, and will ship a week later. All models will include iOS 8.1 preinstalled by default.

Separately, Apple released OS X Yosemite as a free download, and updates to the iMac and Mac Mini line.
