iOS 18 is Available to Download Now
Apple has released iOS 18 as a software update for all iPhone users, after a summer of beta testing the new system software.
While iOS 18 isn’t a revolutionary software update, it does offer many new customization options and features for iPhone and iPad users, including the ability to color hue icons and widgets, new Dark Mode icons, an option to make icons larger on the Home Screen, the ability to customize the redesigned Control Center, a dedicated Passwords app, a Calculator app on iPad, new Safari features like Distraction Control which lets you select obnoxious areas on a webpage to hide, a redesigned Photos app that will confuse some users, the ability to schedule Messages, along with many smaller changes to apps like Notes and Mail. Later, starting with iOS 18.1, users with compatible devices will also find Apple Intelligence AI features throughout the operating system.
iOS 18 for iPhone arrives alongside iPadOS 18 for iPad, as well as watchOS 11 for Apple Watch, macOS Sequoia for Mac, and tvOS 18 for Apple TV.
iOS 18 Supported Devices
If your iPhone supports iOS 17, then you’ll also be able to run iOS 18 on that iPhone. Basically anything newer than iPhone XR is supported, including all models of iPhone 16, iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone 11, as well as iPhone XS and iPhone SE 2nd gen. You can see a full list of iPhone models compatible with iOS 18 here if interested.
You will also need about 16GB of free storage available on your device to be able to successfully download and install iOS 18.
Note that Apple Intelligence AI features require an iPhone 15 Pro or better, or an iPad with M1 chip or better, and won’t be available until iOS 18.1 later in the year.

Separate from iOS 18, you will also find updates for iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15.0, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2.
Apparently iPad OS 18 bricked a small number of iPad Pro M4 when they were updating and would not boot or turn on. Some will have to even be replaced. I am always skeptical of these version upgrades at their initial release. Apple has pulled the update for the iPad Pro 4’s u til they can correct the issue. I thought maybe that should have been corrected in beta’s but that’s just me thinking it might be important not to brick a device when upgrading the OS.
You really don’t expect problems with latest hardware, older stuff maybe. I never touch new OS releases, doesn’t matter whether it’s for mobile devices or Macs.
Also available on Tuesday 17 Sept 2024 was iOS 17.7 for iPhones. I installed it yesterday and it seems to be running fine.
thanks for info.
I was on public beta updates, but I’m not getting an update now. I tried switching beta updates off but that did not help. Is the last beta update identical to the final release? Or is there a problem on my phone?
if there’s a way to un-screw-up Safari, please let me know. it used to have a small row of icons with frequently visited sites, but now there’s a cluster of “suggestions” which look like Windows Metro tiles and it’s an ugly, unusable mess but there’s no obvious way to make that go back to how it used to be.
really sick of apple “improving” stuff until it’s ugly and unusable.
