Safari 15.1 for Mac Released, Reverts Tab Appearance Changes from Safari 15
Apple has released Safari 15.1 for macOS Big Sur. The update reverts the controversial Safari 15 changes to the appearance of tabs, and includes security updates and bug fixes as well.
The Safari changes were brief, but impacted the appearance of tabs in Safari 15 for Mac, and Safari 15 for iPad. With the now rolled back changes, it was difficult to determine which tabs were active, and the appearance of the tabs themselves looked more like off-color buttons. With Safari 15.1, the Safari tabs look as they always have.
Safari 15.1 is available now from Software Update, accessible via the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update.
Choose the tiny “More info” button to install updates without installing MacOS Monterey if you’re not ready to jump to the next major system software release, allowing you to stay put on macOS Big Sur with Safari 15.1.
With the new update, if users choose the “Separate” tab layout option in Safari Preferences, the tab appearance resembles the traditional look.
Aside from installing Safari 15.1 to macOS Big Sur, Mac users can also download and update to macOS Monterey to get the classic looking Safari tabs back on the Mac.
iPad users can also revert the Safari tab appearance change by updating to iPadOS 15.1.
iPhone users were not impacted by this particular change to Safari, but should install iOS 15.1 anyway to gain access to SharePlay and other features.
I totally welcome this. old school was the best way.
How do I revert the safari 15.1 tabs in the ‘separate’ tab view back to the floating taps like in the compact view? The compact view is too compact for me and I like how Safari 15.0 did the tabs in separate view, is their a safari customization for this?
From Safari, pull down the “Safari” menu then choose “Preferences”, under General you’ll find the two tab view options; Compact or Separate.
You’ll see the appearance change immediately, so you can choose whichever you’d prefer.
No, he is referring to obtaining the old separated look. The compact look is still here, but the old separated looked didn’t connect all the way. It looked much better.
I noticed on my MacBook Air, after upgrading to 15.1, that the Safari tab on the right side gets cut off when there are multiple tabs open. ANyone else seeing this?
