How to Switch Back to ChatGPT 4o from ChatGPT 5

ChatGPT is wildly popular for good reason as an incredibly useful artificial inteligence and LLM tool. But OpenAI recently introduced ChatGPT 5, and while generally every release of ChatGPT has been a significant improvement and well received, the same is not entirely to be said about the introduction of ChatGPT 5, which tends to regurgitate things found on reddit in a kind of unemotional corporate speak – hardly the ChatGPT experience most users enjoyed or are looking for. The GPT-5 experience is negative enough for some users that there is a fair amount of backlash online as many users miss the GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 experiences.

If you’re not happy with ChatGPT 5 and want to revert back to ChatGPT 4o, you can do so easily, with the web client, Mac client, iPhone/iOS and iPad/iOS client, and elsewhere.

How to Revert to ChatGPT 4o from ChatGPT 5

Note that you must be a paying ChatGPT user (ChatGPT Plus or better) to be able to switch models.

1. Go to https://chat.openai.com and login with your OpenAI account as usual
2. Click on your name/profile in the bottom left corner, then go to “Settings” and to “General”
3. Make sure “Show Legacy Models” is enabled within https://chatgpt.com/#settings
4. Quit and relaunch your ChatGPT apps elsewhere

How to Switch Back to ChatGPT 4o from ChatGPT 5 on Mac

1. Open a chat window in ChatGPT app for Mac
2. Click on “ChatGPT” at the top of the window in the titlebar to open a dropdown menu
3. Under “Legacy Models” select “GPT-4o” to switch back to GPT-4o

How to Get ChatGPT 4o Back and Switch from ChatGPT 5 on iPhone & iPad

1. From the ChatGPT app tap on “ChatGPT” at the top of the app window
2. From the dropdown menu look under Legacy Models and select “GPT-4o” to switch back to GPT-4o

* Important Note: if you do not see this setting available on the ChatGPT app for Mac, iPhone, or iPad, it’s likely because you either need to enable legacy models on the web, or you are not a paying ChatGPT user (ChatGPT Plus or better is necessary to be able to switch GPT models, including from GPT 5 to GPT 4).

You can make the same switch and revert from GPT 5 to GPT 4o on the mobile clients as well by tapping on “ChatGPT” at the top of the app window and selecting GPT-4o as your model.
