MacOS Golden Gate 27

The next major version of MacOS, versioned as MacOS Golden Gate 27, has been announced by Apple at WWDC 2026. MacOS Golden Gate 27 apparently has a significant emphasis on stability, performance, and general improvements to the Mac operating system. Of course you will also find some new features and changes as well, including a dedicated Siri app.

MacOS Golden Gate New Features & Improvements

MacOS Golden Gate 27 is focused extensively on performance and refinements, with improvements to memory and CPU usage, design and UI, rendering, search, and much more, but that doesn’t mean there are not new features too.

For those who are peeved by the Liquid Glass design, MacOS Golden Gate brings a slider to adjust the intensity of Liquid Glass, and there are various visual tweaks throughout the user interface intended to make things more legible and smoother.

New Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features are prominent additions to MacOS Golden Gate 27, with a dedicated Siri app, contextual features, the ability to change compromised passwords, and much more. Given Apple has promised many Siri and AI advancements in the past that have fell short or disappointed users, it’s reasonable to be reserved for expectations around these AI features, and of course there are some people who simply don’t care about AI type of features at all so they might be less thrilled about the new Siri AI experience.

MacOS 27 also includes many new child safety features, like parental approval for visiting websites, time allowances and schedules for apps, communication safety features, and redesigned parental controls that are intended to be easier to use.

As for the name, MacOS Golden Gate 27 is named after the famous Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.

Many of the features for MacOS 27 are also available for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, which has the same emphasis on performance, improvements, and Siri AI.

How to Get MacOS Golden Gate 27 Beta Now

You can download and install the MacOS Golden Gate 27 developer beta right now if you’d like, but that’s not recommended for the vast majority of people. Be sure to backup your Mac first, otherwise you could lose all of your data, and be unable to downgrade.

  1. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates
  2. Choose “MacOS Golden Gate 27 Developer Beta”
  3. Choose to install the MacOS Golden Gate 27 beta, it will install like any other software update

Again this is not recommended, except for advanced users, preferably on secondary hardware.

Some MacOS Tahoe users might feel compelled to try the MacOS 27 beta right away given how buggy Tahoe already is, but that’s not recommended since MacOS Golden Gate 27 is actively in beta and will be much less stable than a finalized system software release. A better choice would be to wait for the public beta to debut next month, since it will be a bit more refined.

MacOS Golden Gate 27 Compatibility & Supported Macs

MacOS Golden Gate 27 is the first release of modern MacOS to not support any Intel Mac hardware.

This means that MacOS 27 is compatible only with Apple Silicon Macs, meaning M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, A18, etc chips, so basically anything from the M1 MacBook Pro (2020 model) and newer, is compatible with MacOS 27.

MacOS Golden Gate 27 Release Date

MacOS Golden Gate 27 will be released this fall, according to Apple.

While the precise date is unknown to the public, Apple usually releases new versions of system software to the general public after the fall iPhone launch, so expect that to be sometime in the September or October range.

The MacOS 27 beta is available now, and the public beta will be available next month.

Sequoia was (is) my first MacOS. I have an M3 MacBook Air. I did not upgrade to to Tahoe, disliking many of the complaints about legibility. I hope that GG 27 will have addressed most if not all of those issues, because I would really like to have new Siri features.
