Touchscreen MacBook Pro

Apple has launched two all-new touchscreen MacBook Pro models, with 14″ and 16″ OLED display sizes. This marks a notable reversal from Apple against their longstanding resistance to touch screen laptops due to ergonomic issues.

The new MacBook Pro features a redesigned enclosure, M5 Pro or M5 Max chip options with up to 128GB RAM and 16GB of storage, a smaller Dynamic Island cutout replaces The Notch on the display, and is lighter weight than predecessors, weighing 3lbs for the 14″ model, and 4lbs for the 16″ model. A notable welcome return is the reintroduction of the glowing Apple logo on the back of the MacBook Pro.

There is full gesture support for the touchscreen, allowing for gestures like pinch to zoom, scrolling, and swiping between pages, slides, or Spaces. Apple Pencil is not supported.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro includes a front-facing FaceTime camera, three Thunderbolt 5 / USB-C ports, HDMI port, SDXC card slot, MagSafe for power, and a headphone jack.

The touchscreen display itself is OLED, and available in both 14″ and 16″ sizes, which Apple is calling the PROLED XDR Display. Presumably the display will have perceptible PWM like most OLED and LED-adjacent screens have, which could dissuade some PWM sensitive users from being able to use the Mac.

The 14″ touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at $2899, while the 16″ touchscreen MacBook Pro starts at $3399. Pre-orders are live now and the touchscreen MacBook Pro will be available on November 6.

As noted earlier, the introduction of a touchscreen Mac marks a departure from Apple’s prior stance on the matter. Apple had long been skeptical of touchscreen laptops, with Steve Jobs famously lamenting on the ergonomics of such a device (videos embedded are via X, you can find us there too):

The standard non-touch models of MacBook Pro are still available as well, the base model of which was just spec-bumped to the M6 chip.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro is the fourth major Apple product released this week, adding alongside to the A20 iPad Mini, M6 MacBook Pro, and M6 iMac.
