Mac Setups: Medical Researchers Desk
This weeks awesome Mac setup comes to us from Sergey N., a doctor and medical researcher in Russia who needs plenty of screen space to get work done quickly and efficiently. Maximized for productivity, the Macs are set up with a Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and a Griffin Powermate, each configured for different tasks and gestures. Hardware shown is as follows:
- iMac 27″ (mid-2011) with 16GB RAM, 1TB HD & 240GB Intel SSD running OS X 10.7.3
- Dual Dell U2711 displays connected to iMac
- Apple keyboard
- Magic Mouse configured with custom gestures tied to keyboard shortcuts using MagicPrefs
- Magic Trackpad also configured with custom gestures
- MacBook Air 11″ (2010) 2GB RAM, 64GB SSD, used for travel
- MacBook Air 13″ (2011) 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, used for additional screen space
- Griffin PowerMate USB controller, custom configured for app-specific shortcuts
- 2 iPod Shuffles attached to the left display for music
- iPod touch 4th gen, 32GB model for the kids
- iPhone 4S 64GB
- iPad 1 16GB that gets occasional use as an additional screen
- PowerCom Imperial UPS for power management
The iMac is configured with 9 virtual desktops per screen, for a whopping total of 27 workspaces not counting fullscreen apps, and the MacBook Air 13″ brings an additional 8 workspaces into the mix. How’s that for maximizing productivity?

Hi, some answers here:
1. iMac mid-2011 2011 has 2 Thunderbolts, hence 2 displays.
2. It’s kinda stupid that Griffin Powermate is popular only for music and video. It’s awesome for every app because you can map every keyboard shortcut to a a unique gesture. E.g. short pressing in Finder would create new folder, right turn in Finder would send a file through e-mail, left turn in Mail would reply to all etc.
3. Desktops are for documents and lengthy projects. E.g. on desktop 4 you have 6 documents to work on for a week or so, that you have to see at one time. On desktop 5 you have 4 documents on another project that again can remain here for, say, a month. That’s the idea.
Fanstastic setup well done!!
Got the same question then “CQ”, Imac 2011 = One mini display port ! how he connect 2 one’s more ?
How did he connect 2 external monitors to 2011 iMac? It has only one mini display port.
2011 iMac 27″ has 2 x Thunderbolt
No it has not. I know it because I have it. Last iMac without Thunderbolt. So probably the answer was EVGA 100-U2-UV19-TR. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I don’t think I’d be more productive with 25 desktops.
Gotta agree with you on that one….my thought exactly.
Not a lot of medical research going on there. Researching the next holiday maybe?
What is that little gadget in the middle emitting blue light out from under it? Not the Alarm Clock with the blue screen, the little round thing.
Nevermind. I deduced which item it is listed in the post and Googled it. Pretty nifty.
That is the Griffin PowerMate, it’s very popular with videographers and musicians.
Too messy.
Bit excessive
Epic workstation, I would be thrilled to have that on my desk.
