Apple has released an update for iTunes, versioned as iTunes 12.1.2. The small update is available now for Mac OS X and Windows, includes various improvements to the media management application that is basically essential for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users. This update is particularly important for Mac, as it enables syncing photos between iTunes and the new Photos app in OS X.

The easiest way to update iTunes to 12.1.2 on the Mac is through the Software Update mechanism, accessible via the  Apple menu > App Store > Updates tab in OS X. The download from existing versions of iTunes is around 100MB and should install quickly without incident.

You can also find the update available the next time you relaunch iTunes application in either Mac OS X or Windows, or download the latest version directly from the official site at apple.com/itunes.

The release notes accompanying iTunes 12.1.2 for OS X are brief but mention improvements to functionality with syncing an iOS device to the new Photos app, which is included in the OS X 10.10.3 update.

“This update improves support for syncing photos to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, from the new Photos app of OS X. In addition, this update also adds several refinements to the Get Info window and improves overall stability.”

Not mentioned, but presumably iPhone and iPad users would want to update their iOS devices to iOS 8.3 and their Macs to OS X 10.10.3 for optimal compatibility with the new version of iTunes. Simply maintaining the most recent versions of software is a good way to avoid confusion and potential syncing errors that require troubleshooting down the road.

The refinements to the media Get Info window of iTunes 12.1.2 appear aimed at increasing usability, making it a bit more obvious what is editable and adjustable:

This contrasts with the Get Info panel in prior releases of iTunes 12, which mostly looked like an unchangeable panel of metadata about media files in the application.

Those hoping for a return of the iTunes sidebar will continue to use the Playlists screen to access a sidebar in this version of iTunes.

Well, there you go. I found the answer. It’s in View – status bar. Thanks anyway.

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to get back the info at the bottom of itunes.
The bit where it tells you how many albums, total time and how many GBs? I switched to playlist but it didn’t show up.

Also, I used to be able to highlight the tracks in an album (now in My Music) and it would tell me how long the album was and how many MBs it was. That’s gone too.
Has Apple taken that away, or can I get it back?
    thanks,
    Francis

The field outlines in the Get Info window aren’t new in this release; they’ve been there since 12.1. What’s new this time is that the fields have been rearranged a bit — “album” and “album artist” were at the bottom of the window in 12.1. Very happy to see they’ve been moved back up to where they used to be in iTunes 12.

I am still hoping and waiting for the return of the sidebar to iTunes!!!!!!!! The playlist garbage does not work! Ease of use and flexibility have been very limited since they tore out the sidebar. PLEASE bring it back at the very least as an option if not PERMANENTLY!!!!
Every single person in my user group feels this way!

I understand apple 4 evers frustration with seemingly mindless people buying apple for no reason.

But that’s kind of the problem isnt it. There is a reason, the opprating system runs great, doesn’t crash, and allows mindless users to be able to adapt to the changing electronic environment.

My father in law, who is about 55-60 has two degrees, and can’t use a computer to save his life. One day he decided to mess around with the ipad jokingly, and to his surprize it just did what he wanted it to do. He decided that using that tool he felt comfortable enough to enroll in school for his teaching credential. Now he teaches, because he mindlessly fumbled around on an ipad.

I love Apple updates. My family has in the last 8 years had a total of 114 Apple products. My wife and I are both Apple Certified and my two kids, Leafsley (6) and Crater (9) are working on their Apple certifications. They have both been promised jobs as soon as they are certified!

Recently The little bride and I, as well as the kids, had to cease all friendship and communication with non Apple users as we found them to be irritating and useless. We share Steve Jobs vision in this household, and intend to spend our free time this summer, spreading the Apple word and tech.

I will miss my wife’s parents, but they just could not comprehend the intricacies of the Apple environment, and chose to continue to use Android. Luckily the judge sided with us and denied their lawsuit over visitation rights, so the kids minds can stay focused now. My parents both are into Apple so they get extra time with the “Little Apple Crisps” as we call them.

We already have our reservations to get our Apple Watches and can’t wait.
Just to let you know how life changing Apple has become for us, let me share with you what happened last Christmas. On Christmas Eve, my wife’s parents were at our place, we all took turns opening our presents. Both of my kids received a brand new, top of the line Samsung Galaxy phone from the Grandparents. I watched my son Crater for a few minutes and he started to become visibly ill, as he held it in his small hand. He went over to his sister Leafsley, and whispered something to her.

Moments later, they both walked up and stood in front of the Grandparents. Simultaneously, they smashed them onto the hard dirt floor of our tent. (We had a beautiful house 4 years ago, but keeping current with every Apple product caused us to fall behind in the mortgage, and then lose the house altogether. We now live on State Forest Land, in a 3 room tent. It’s really nice being this close to nature and still getting 4G for all our needs!)

Any who, the grandparents were very upset, and stormed off. That was the last we saw them until the court case, I mentioned earlier that we won.

I sincerely hope that reading my story helps save other lost souls from becoming entangled with that evil Android OS, and that you too, may see the one true way with Apple.

I updated to iTunes 12.1.2 but I did not find the Chris Rea song Josephine in my library, but I did find it on YouTube. There is rain on my window, but I’m thinking of you. Josephine, I send you all of my love
