If you suspect someone is snooping through your iPhone call log, messages, email, or through other apps, you can set a simple trap of sorts to potentially catch such intrusions on privacy. iOS on the iPad has an “Undo” and “Redo” option. Undo does just what it sounds like, it undoes the last text based action. For example, if you typed out a sentence but decided it wasn’t what you wanted to say, you could hit “Undo” and it would instantly disappear. Redo is also fairly self explanatory, as it redoes the prior text action that was just undone. For example, if you wanted to restore that sentence you typed out but made disappear with “Undo”, then hitting “Redo” would make it appear again.

Each new version of OS X and iOS tends to come with some gorgeous new wallpapers, and it looks as if OS X Mavericks will be no different. Found in the latest Developer Preview 7 build of OS X Mavericks by a member of iClarified, this collection of 8 beautiful wallpapers are offered at an absolute whopper resolution of 5120×2880 (a resolution that, conveniently, would be the equivalent of a Thunderbolt or iMac 27″ with a 2x retina display).

Apple has released OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 7 to individuals registered with the Mac Developer program. The update includes bug fixes and inches Mavericks ever closer to the final Golden Master (GM) build. Developers running Mavericks DP6 will find the update available now in the Mac App Store, accessible through Software Update, and weighs in around 1GB for most machines.

The public release of OS X Mavericks is scheduled for sometime this fall, and it’s possible that a Mavericks release date will be announced alongside iOS 7 and the new iPhone models at the upcoming Apple event.

OS X Mavericks includes over 200 new features and enhancements for the Mac, including major revisions to Safari, tabbed Finder windows, Finder file tagging, a Maps application, iBooks for OS X, and more. There is no word on pricing, but if it follows precedent set by prior OS X updates it will likely cost around $20.

For those who read within the iBooks app of iOS, digital bookmarks are a very useful feature that work much like bookmarks do in a real paper book; you set a bookmark on a page, and you then have easy access for future reference, whether to find where you left off reading or to quickly jump to an important passage.

You can set bookmarks with just about anything that opens in the iBooks app, whether it’s a native iBook, ebook, or PDF, so long as it opens and has page references you can set bookmarks and quickly access them again, and of course the feature is universal within the iBooks app for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and (soon) OS X.

Apple has sent out invitations to a September 10 event hosted at their Cupertino Campus, confirming the widely anticipated launch day of the next iPhone models.

The invite, shown above, features many overlapping brightly colored flat and transparent circles, in an apparent reference to the expected colorful iPhone 5C models and the vibrant iOS 7 visual overhaul, along with the words “This should brighten everyone’s day.”

Two new iPhone models are expected to be released at the September event. The iPhone 5C is said to be a lower-cost colorful model based upon existing iPhone 5 hardware, while the iPhone 5S is rumored to be the new higher-end iPhone model featuring updated internal components. Both devices will run iOS 7, which will likely be released to the public soon after the event.

Did you know you can set iPhone photos to automatically backup to Dropbox? You can really never have too many backups of your most important files, and since our iPhone photos and pictures often fall into the ‘very important’ category, having an automatic backup solution directly from your iPhone can be a good idea. Yes, using iCloud will back up some photos, but it doesn’t offer direct access to a single picture the way that copying them to your computer does. That’s where Dropbox can come in, offering a bit of both worlds; direct photo access, but the photos are backed up to the cloud, and automatically.

If you need to know the disk performance of an external drive, you can easily go about testing the read and write speed of any such drive by using several third party apps. We’ll cover two, the first is aptly named Disk Speed Test, and the second is called Xbench. Either will work to determine the read/write speeds of any drive, though we’re going to focus specifically on external devices, including USB flash thumb drives, standard USB external hard drives, a Thunderbolt based external disk, firewire, or even network volumes.

This can be helpful for benchmarking the performance of external volumes for Time Machine backups, RAID setups, or even just to find out if an external USB flash key drive is fast enough to run a game or app from.

Wondering how to refresh a Finder window in Mac OS? There is no refresh button or keyboard shortcut for the Mac OS X Finder, something which can become a nuisance when a folder window or directory does not refresh contents after something has changed. That may be a fairly rare occurrence with a Mac built-in hard drive, but external drives and particularly network drives used for file sharing can often exhibit this behavior, where adjustments to the file system are not represented in the active Finder window. Thus, there is sometimes a need to refresh a Finder window on the Mac.

Because there isn’t a direct method to refresh Finder windows, you can use one of these tricks we’ll discuss below to go about refreshing Finder window contents instead.

You can easily configure Google / Gmail contacts to sync with an iOS device like an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This transfers all Google Contact details onto the iOS device, in addition to keeping all contacts in sync, meaning any changes made in one service will carry over to the other nearly instantaneously. This functions much like how iCloud syncs contacts between Apple devices, except it offers the ability to sync across platforms and between Apple and Google services.

Removing attachments from an email or everything in Mail app can be useful for a variety of reasons, from ditching a file that is no longer relevant to an email thread, to lowering the file transfer size when sending/replying to a message, or for more extreme cases for individuals with smaller hard drives, for reducing the overall disk space consumed by the Mail attachments directory.

Whatever the case, use some caution when removing attachments this way, as there is no way to retrieve the mail attachment locally after they have been removed from Mail app. For this reason, if you intend on deleting many attachments from many emails you may want to make a manual backup of the attachment directory beforehand, which we will also cover below by showing you where the attachment files are stored in OS X.
