Popular jailbreak and unlock utility PwnageTool 4.2 has been released and includes the untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak in addition to resolving the iBooks DRM problem and some WiFi connectivity issues with the Apple TV 2.
PwnageTool 4.2 supports jailbreaking nearly all iOS devices including iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, Verizon iPhone 4, iPod touch 3g, iPod touch 4G, iPad, and Apple TV 2. The only device that PwnageTool will not work on is the iPod touch 2G.
PwnageTool 4.2 is particularly important to those who rely on an iPhone unlock, since PwnageTool allows users to preserve existing unlocked baseband while allowing users to upgrade their device to iOS 4.2.1.
Hot off the heals of iPhone Mini and MacBook Air 3G rumors, there’s even more iPhone 5 rumors circulating. The latest is a claim that, like the supposed iPhone Mini, the iPhone 5 will include an edge-to-edge 4″ screen. With so many rumors flying around it can be hard to keep track of them all, so here’s a quick list. Read more »
Evidence continues to suggest that Apple is deeply interested in bringing 3G communications inside future Macs, particularly the MacBook Air. Let’s look at two pieces of recent evidence to see if a MacBook Air 3G is destined for a future release. Read more »
Wondering what the warranty status is of an Apple Product? You can easily check.
Sometimes troubleshooting your problems just isn’t enough and you need to take your hardware in for service, but before you do so, you might want to check on your Apple warranty status. This is very easy to do for any hardware, including Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple Watch, Apple TV, all you need is the devices serial number to check the warranty of that device.
Rumors of an iPhone Mini are buzzing around along with a ton of commentary on the possibile device. In the world of pundits and Apple critics you’ll hear both praise of the idea and tons of complaints as to why it shouldn’t be made.
The most prominent complaint is that an iPhone Mini/iPhone Nano’s screen would be too small to be usable, and that by creating another iPhone screen resolution Apple would further complicate UI development for the entire iOS platform. If you listen to the Apple critics, this would somehow lead to Android style fragmentation of the iOS world.
I don’t think that’s going to happen though, and here’s why… I think an iPhone Mini will use a screen very similar if not identical to the current iPhone 4. Let’s review the iPhone Mini reports and we can see evidence suggesting this to be the case. Read more »
Is this the coolest MacBook Air sleeve on the market? Dubbed the Macvelope, this case is made to look like a traditional yellow office envelope, but they’re specifically made to snuggly fit the new MacBook Air series. This is about as discrete as a laptop case can get, and the inside is lightly padded with a soft liner to protect your precious cargo from scuffs.
The Macvelope Envelope Case comes in two flavors, one that fits the 13″ Air and one that fits the 11″, both are currently on sale at Amazon:
This might not provide the best protection for the Air from drops or shock, but if you want an unassuming sleeve to at least protect the new Air from scratches this is pretty awesome looking. Read more »
Looking around for a clock screensaver I stumbled across Fliqlo, which is a simple and free flip clock screensaver that mimics the appearance of those retro flip clocks that existed in the time of dinosaurs.
The Fliqlo flip clock screen saver is visually pleasing and it’s available for Mac users as well as offerin versions for Windows and even iOS.
We all have that person (or ten) on our buddy lists that insist on having their IM text formatted in stupendously obnoxious ways. Maybe it’s just using tiny font sizes, but sometimes it’s a full fledged assault on your eyes with bright pink size 26 Comic Sans font clashing against a neon yellow background in a way that makes your eyes want to bleed. The culprit of this is often Windows IM clients and their accompanying themes, but given how easy it is to customize the fonts of nearly any messaging client there’s no single source to blame.
If you’re like me, you hate this stuff, so what should you do? Set iChat to automatically reformat all incoming instant messages! You can set all messages to be a uniform font, size, color, and background, guaranteeing that you’ll be able to keep a simple and easy to read instant message conversation despite whatever disaster is lurking on the other users UI end.
Rumors of a smaller iPhone continue to heat up, and where there’s smoke, there tends to be fire. The Wall Street Journal is now confirming Bloomberg’s report of an iPhone Mini, and they’re also revealing some new details about the device, including it’s codename, N97.
iPhone Mini: Lighter, Half-Size, Edge-to-Edge Screen, No Home Button?
According to WSJ, the new smaller iPhone is intended to be sold alongside the existing iPhone lineup, but it would be about half the size of the current iPhone 4 model. Citing an individual who saw a prototype, the iPhone Mini is “significantly lighter than iPhone 4” and includes an edge-to-edge screen that is entirely touch sensitive, indicating that the home button may be a thing of the past. The smaller iPhone will also include a virtual keyboard and voice based navigation, which would likely just be features of a future iOS version.
Free With Contract?
Their source also says that the smaller iPhone will be available at about half the price of existing iPhones, which would allow cellular carriers to fully subsidize the upfront cost to the consumer. This would place the new smaller iPhone in direct competition to rival smartphones that are sold deeply discounted or included free with a service contract.
Wireless Syncing via New Free MobileMe
The same WSJ report also indicates that the existing iPhone 4 and future iPhone models will have wireless syncing capabilities, thanks to an overhaul of Apple’s MobileMe service. This would allow users to access their entires iTunes libraries from anywhere via the cloud, rather than having to physically sync the iPhone to a computer to transfer the files. In addition to wireless syncing, the new MobileMe would also serve as a digital locker for multimedia, including photos, movies, and video. This would be offered as a free service.
Summer 2011 Launch… Maybe
Both the new line of iPhones and the new MobileMe service are expected to launch this summer, but those plans could change, according to the WSJ’s source.
A summer release could put the devices alongside the presumed launch date of iPhone 5, which is assumed to be released at WWDC 2011.
Of course all of this is just a rumor, but it’s following a similar pattern to the Verizon iPhone rumors, with Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal both confirming the devices independently through sources long before the public release. We’ll keep you updated on the iPhone Mini as we hear more.
iCal automatically assumes that a new event will be an hour long, but you can manually adjust that into shorter minute intervals by using the defaults write command.
defaults write com.apple.iCal "Default duration in minutes for new event" 15
You can set the 15 at the end to any other number of minutes you want, then just quit iCal and relaunch it for changes to take effect.
This tip is from CmdComma, although if you copy/paste it from their site the command doesn’t execute properly due to the improper use of quotation marks.
GreenPois0n RC6 is now available to download, RC6 includes support to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on any iPhone, Verizon iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch, and now Apple TV 2, all of which are untethered jailbreaks.
Playing NES games on your Mac might be considered nerdy or retro, but it’s also just plain fun. I finally found a decent NES emulator for Mac that’s free, and more importantly, it’s stable.
It’s called Nestopia, (get it, NEStopia?), and it has all the features you’ve come to expect from a good emulator: stability, freeze states, customizable keyboard controls, adjustable frame rates, and various display tweaks that can even emulate the funky NTSC connection.
Playing games is easy, either select them from the file browser in Nestopia, or you can drag them into the app, or once the filetype is associated (.nes ROM), just double click on a ROM file to play it. Read more »
In honor of the recent snow storm to hit North America, here’s a MacBook Pro being used despite the weather. If you’re going to be snowed in, you might as well have a good Mac setup to keep you company right? Picture via Flickr.
Sure you could get Internet Explorer on your Mac through WineBottler or in Virtualbox on the Mac too, but that takes effort. What if you want a retro-throwback experience to the days of Internet Explorer 6 and all it’s goofy tendencies to muck itself up?
Could an iPhone Mini debut this year? According to Bloomberg, Apple is set to unveil a smaller iPhone model in the middle of this year, which is around the same time the iPhone 5 release date and WWDC 2011 conference is expected.
Citing a source who has seen a prototype, the smaller version of the iPhone that we’ll loosely call iPhone Mini will be cheaper and start at $200 without requiring a service contract. The device is said to feature components from the existing iPhone 4, but be about 1/3 smaller than existing models. Bloomberg’s source cautions that “the introduction may be delayed or scrapped” and that not many Apple employees know of the project.
iPhone Mini & iPhone 5: Dual-Mode with Universal SIM?
Possibly related, Bloomberg also says that Apple is working on dual-mode iPhones, which would allow a single device to work on both GSM and CDMA networks, in addition to a Universal SIM card that would allow iPhone users to jump between different GSM networks without switching sim cards. A Universal SIM may signify that iPhones carrying such a chip would be carrier agnostic, which would render the iPhone carrier unlock hacks irrelevant.
Bloomberg should generally be considered a fairly reliable source of Apple rumors. Last year their sources accurately predicted the Verizon iPhone announcement would be in January 2011.
The iPad 2 might be in production but it hasn’t even been announced yet. Regardless, that’s not stopping the hungry Apple rumor mill from talking about the model to be released after that… iPad 3.
Talk of iPad 3 started when John Gruber of DaringFireball made a passing reference to the future device, which was quickly picked up by AlleyInsider and TechCrunch who cited that as a source for the products release schedule.
In return, DaringFireball wrote a lengthy post on the matter, part of which is him saying that some take his guesswork a little too seriously:
Now when I make actual guesses, some people (not unreasonably) think I’m being coy and actually releasing information that I know. Henceforth, when I say I’m guessing, I’m really guessing.
In other words, Gruber is not channeling Steve Jobs and Apple’s super secret release schedule from a crystal ball, although that is amusing imagery to consider. Read more »
We’ve shown a few different ways of how to lock your Mac screen with a keystroke or a hot corner, but another option is to lock the screen and desktop of your Mac through a little-known Mac OS X menu bar item. The result is a little lock icon in the menu bar of OS X that you can pull down to access and instantly password protect the desktop and everything on your Mac, requiring a user log in to regain access again.
