Security Update 2014-02 for OS X

Apple has released a series of security updates for OS X, with support for OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, and Lion Server. The update is simply labeled as Security Update 2014-002 and includes Safari 7.0.3, and is now widely available through the App Store or by downloading the updater dmg directly from Apple.

The update is recommended for all Mac users to install. Accompanying notes are very brief, stating simply that the update “improves the security of OS X.”, but the full security notes can be found below for those interested.

Typically the easiest way to download and install the update is through the Mac App Store, accessible through the  Apple menu and “Software Update” feature. Users can also choose to download the appropriate update from Apple with the links below:

Even though the update is small, it’s still recommended to start a quick backup of the Mac with Time Machine before beginning. To complete installation, the computer will need to restart.

iOS users will also find a similarly small update available for their devices with the concurrent release of iOS 7.1.1.

The complete security notes for the update can be read here at Apple.

Don’t install this update if you rely on Dropbox – it breaks Dropbox’s ability to connect to the internet. They obv broke something with SSL while trying and fix Heartbleed, i guess.

But ya, avoid this one until they can get it together.

Getting black boxes or black backgrounds when shifting for/or starting new programs. Nik Software going black. Programs mixes into each other and crashes!
Can I go back one step in the updates?

Just had someone call who can’t open certain apps after the update. He also had to restore to Mountain Lion when he tried to go to Mavericks when it first released.

  4. Hector says:

Installed the update and rebooted. My login password corrupt and I could not login, not even under the guest account. After reading it happend to many others I found a solution. Had to safe boot, go to terminal and reset password and keychain. Was able to normal boot after that.

Upgraded and now the screen remains black – cannot get the Macbook Pro to boot up

    • Please hold power button down until startup chime — then quickly hold SHIFT key down for 2-3 minutes until you see screen flash.

If you see login screen with red text ‘safe boot’ — proceed to log in and remove third-party plugins that may be affected by security update.

      Hope this helps.
