iOS 11.3.1 Software Update

Apple has released iOS 11.3.1 for iPhone and iPad users. The update is said to include some security updates, and also resolves a problem that caused some iPhone devices with repaired screens to not work as intended.

The security updates make the iOS 11.3.1 update relevant to all iPhone and iPad users with devices running a prior iOS build. The unresponsive screen issue is apparently limited to select iPhone 8 models that were repaired using third-party components, emphasizing why it’s important to repair a broken iPhone screen through Apple or an Apple authorized repair center.

Separately, Apple has released Security Update 2018-001 for MacOS High Sierra, and Safari 11.1 for Mac OS El Capitan, Sierra, and High Sierra.

Download iOS 11.3.1 for iPhone or iPad

Always back up an iPhone or iPad to iCloud or iTunes, or both, before installing any system software update:

  1. Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone or iPad
  2. Go to “General” and then to “Software Update”
  3. When iOS 11.3.1 appears, choose to “Download and Install”

iOS users can also install iOS 11.3.1 through iTunes by connecting the iPhone or iPad to a computer and launching iTunes.

Another more advanced option is to download and install the iOS 11.3.1 software update as an IPSW file and manually install it, the links to IPSW firmware files are below.

Users can also choose to install IPSW files through iTunes, using IPSW files is considered advanced but is not particularly complex, though the process is unnecessary for most iPhone and iPad users.

iOS 11.3.1 Release Notes

Release notes accompanying the iOS 11.3.1 download are as follows:

iOS 11.3.1 improves the security of your iPhone or iPad and addresses an issue where touch input was unresponsive on some iPhone 8 devices because they were serviced with non-genuine replacement displays.

Note: Non-genuine replacement displays may have compromised visual quality and may fail to work correctly. Apple-certified screen repairs are performed by trusted experts who use genuine Apple parts. See support.apple.com for more information.

Separately, Mac users can find Safari 11.1 along with Security Update 2018-001 for High Sierra.

Don’t do it! After installing the 11.3.1 update, my iPhone 7 is now useless! Apple was able to solve the battery drain (2 hours to go from 4% to 19% and drained from 100% to 0 in a few hours) by resetting the phone. Still, I now have connectivity problems with Sprint…can’t make phone calls… cellular data is sporadic… maps no longer works…phone shuts down intermittently…apps now crash and texting is sporadic. This phone was bulletproof before the update…I am a long time Apple fan but this is crazy and they will not allow us to go backwards… Basically the phone is useless! I hope they resolve this soon!

Hi! Can I have the checksum of the file for iPhone 5s? I just want to check if my download is not corrupted ‘cause I downloaded it over data connection. Or maybe in the future, provide checksums for each file.

Updated my 6s plus and it’s noticibly slower along with the dreaded audio glitch. Does Apple have any competent programmers left?

Every single one of these updates since 11.0 has been a disaster for the iPhone6s and I am sure this one will be also.
