How to install macOS Big Sur public beta

Apple has released the tenth beta version of macOS Big Sur to users who are enrolled in the beta testing program for the next generation Mac OS system software release.

MacOS Big Sur 11 features a refreshed and redesigned user interface, including new icons, a new Dock look, brighter and whiter interface elements, and more white space. Additionally, Big Sur includes Control Center for the Mac, various improvements and new features to Safari including an instant translation capability, new features for Messages on Mac, and various other new features, improvements, and changes.

Though beta system software is generally only recommended to advanced users on secondary hardware, technically speaking anyone can install the public beta of Big Sur on a Mac which is compatible with the OS release. Keep in mind that beta system software is less stable than final builds.

How to Download MacOS Big Sur Beta 10

Always backup the Mac with Time Machine before installing a system software update, particularly with beta builds.

  1. Go to the  Apple menu, then choose “System Preferences”
  2. Select “Software Update”
  3. When macOS Big Sur beta 10 shows as available choose to update and install

As always, the Mac will reboot to finish installation of the software update.

Apple usually goes through a variety of beta versions before issuing a final release to the general public. While the timeline for Big Sur is not entirely clear, the company has said the final version of MacOS Big Sur will be released this fall. There have been mixed rumors that Big Sur will be finalized soon however, and with the tenth beta being released it seems increasingly inevitable for the final release to be available sooner than later.

While I will probably never love Macos as I do OS X (specifically Snow Leopard) and I’m still holding a grudge over the loss of some old but treasured games (Portal and Portal 2 for example) I have to admit that on a newer model mac that can run Big Sur wihout hacking…It really isn’t too bad. While I don’t love it, I certainly don’t hate it as much as I was prepared to.

Stick to 10.14.6, works much better

  3. Quinton says:

Thoughts on when it won’t update and constantly fails and tells me it could the internet connection, which is perfectly 100% fine?

It’s a beta release, so expect difficulties and bugs.

With that said, many users wait until the first 11.1, 11.2, or 11.3 release before installing. I personally never installed Catalina because it was widely reported as problematic every release, including the recent 10.15.7 release which caused problems for some users. I don’t know if there is just not enough testing going on with certain releases or what.

Does your Mac work with what you need it to do? Because sometimes if it isn’t broke, you don’t want to fix it.
