Security Improvement Update for macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 & iOS 26.3.1 Released

Security Improvement

Apple has released what they are calling a “Security Improvement” as a software update for macOS Tahoe 26.3.1, iOS 26.3.1, and iPadOS 26.3.1. The update, err, improvement, is being labeled as macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 (a), macOS 26.3.2 (a), iOS 26.3.1 (a), and iPadOS 26.3.1 (a), and though it installs just like a software update, you won’t find it available as one.

Curiously, the “Security Improvement” is not available through the standard Software Update mechanism on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad, so if you go looking there you will not find any updates available. Instead, the ‘improvement’ is buried inside of a completely different section of settings where almost no user is going to look or even accidentally stumble into it. It would make a lot more sense to my plebeian logic to place all system updates inside of the regular “Software Update” section of Settings, but here we are.

How to Download & Install Security Improvement for macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 (a)

Despite being a security patch, it’s a good idea to backup your Mac with Time Machine before installing any system update:

  1. From the  Apple menu , select “System Settings”
  2. Go to “Privacy & Security”
  3. Look for “Background Security Improvements” to find the update available there

You will need to have already installed macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 before the 26.3.1(a) “improvement” is available to you. If you don’t have the latest version installed on your Mac, you will see a message to install that update first, and then you can get the improvement.

Note that macOS 26.3.2 (a) is only available for MacBook Neo and possibly the new M5 Macs, so you won’t find that version if you’re on a different Mac.

How to Download & Install Security Improvement for iOS 26.3.1 (a), and iPadOS 26.3.1 (a)

Backup before installing, as usual:

  1. Open “System Settings”
  2. Go to “Privacy & Security”
  3. Look for “Background Security Improvements” to find the update available there
  4. Background Security Improvement is an update that is not called an update but requires a reboot to install like one

You will likely notice the “Background Security Improvements” feature is automatically enabled, in which case the update will install itself at the next available opportunity.

The “improvement” requires the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to install to finish installation of the update improvement to your device.

Release Notes for iOS 26.3.1 (a) , iPadOS 26.3.1 (a), macOS 26.3.1 (a), macOS 26.3.2 (a)

Release notes including the download are short and brief:

This Background Security Improvement provides additional protection and is recommended for all users.

The security notes on the web are more detailed about the security issue that is patched:

Available for: iOS 26.3.1, iPadOS 26.3.1, macOS 26.3.1, macOS 26.3.2
Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may bypass Same Origin Policy
Description: A cross-origin issue in the Navigation API was addressed with improved input validation.

Again, why Apple does not simply release these within the “Software Update” framework to make them easy to find, install, and update, is a bit of a mystery, but since most users have the “Security Improvement” feature automatically enabled on their Mac or iPhone, and the update will therefore automatically install when possible, perhaps it’s not as essential to have every system software update under a centralized location within the OS.

Anyway, install the updates on your devices.
