OS X Yosemite Macs

Apple has released another beta of OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite to those registered with the Mac Developer program. Officially labeled as “Pre-release: OS X Update Seed 10.10.2”, the second beta build arrives as 14C78c and is said to focus specifically on Wi-Fi. No other bugs or issues are mentioned in the brief download notes accompanying the release.

Those eligible to receive developer builds of OS X can find the update available through the App Store and Software Update mechanism, the package size is around 300MB.

OS X 10.10.1, which is the most recent available public release of Mac system software, also included resolutions to some wi-fi troubles experienced by users with the first OS X 10.10 release of Yosemite. Despite the wi-fi improvements offered with that version, many Mac users continued to experience wireless connection issues with OS X 10.10.1 anyway, which have sometimes proved resilient to traditional wi-fi network troubleshooting techniques.

Though OS X 10.10.2 does not have a specific release date, Apple typically goes through several beta builds before pushing a wider public release of system software.

I have upgraded to 10.10.2 Beta and waited in hope of a wifi fix. Sadly nothing has changed and I also have WPA personal. When 10 feet away from my router speed is no issue. Pages, email load instantly etc. Move 20ft and throughput is nearly zero. Pages still load but after 30 seconds or longer. So what is the issue/solution?

The Yosemite WiFi problem is because of Yosemite’s wifi implementation that is incompatible with the combined “WPA/WPA2” security settings on wifi routers. If you switch your router to “WPA2 personal” your WiFi will work fine again.

I had the same issue: random drops of Wifi from 12Mb speed to max 2Mb or slower, consistently. After switching to WPA2 personal on my router my WiFi is normal again for several days already.

Oh man ! Could you just please tell me how did you discover that this was the issue ? I was suspecting something close to what you said but never tried it :p It seems you got the job done ! What made you to think about the Wi-Fi encryption ? If you don’t mind, share your thoughts !

      • Olaf says:

Sure! I was triggered by the fact that using my iPhone 5s 4g personal hotspot settings where giving normal WiFi speeds, while at the same time my home-wifi was acting up and behaving slow. I also noticed that on some wifi networks i had normal wifi speed, while at home my wifi speed was dramatically slow after some time.

I just started checking the settings of the correctly working wifi networks (including my iphone personal hotspot connection) and noticed they were all using WPA2 personal, while my home network was using WPA/WPA2. So i changed this, and voila!

My router has been on “WPA2 personal” forever, and I have been having wifi/connectivity issues since the first version of Yosemite came out.

Well, I got all excited over this solution until I found out my router was already set to WPA2 Personal.
