How to change to Light theme on iPhone and iPad

Want to change the visual theme of your iPhone or iPad to the Light appearance theme? If you’re using Dark Mode on iPad or iPhone, you may decide you want to brighten up the visual look of your device with the Light mode theme.

You can switch to the Light Mode theme at anytime, adjusting the entire visual appearance of iOS and iPadOS with a quick settings adjustment. This process of switching to the Light appearance is the same on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

How to Enable Light Mode Appearance on iPhone & iPad

Here’s how you can switch the interface and appearance theme coloration in iOS and iPadOS from dark mode to light mode:

Open the “Settings” app

    iOS settings icon

  1. Choose “Display & Brightness”
  2. Select “Light” under the Appearance section to change the appearance theme to Light mode
  3. How to enable Light Mode theme on iPhone and iPad

  4. Exit Settings

Changing from Dark Mode to Light Mode is instantaneous, and doing will impact the way the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and many apps and even some webpages look.

Some users may prefer the look of the Light theme to the Dark theme, or the Dark theme to the Light theme. Which theme you use is likely dependent on your personal preference and perhaps your surrounding environment and lighting when using your device, as many users like Dark Mode in dimmer areas and at night, and prefer Light Mode in brightly lit working conditions and during the day. And of course some users just prefer to use one appearance theme all the time.

The Light visual appearance theme on iPhone and iPad was the standard and default for many years, but now that dark mode for iPhone and iPod touch and iPad has Dark Mode options, many users opt to use either one appearance theme or the other (or set up automatic Dark / Light mode on a schedule even).

The ability to adjust between Dark Mode and Light Mode requires iOS 13 or iPadOS 13 or newer, older versions of iOS system software do not support the two different visual themes and instead defaulted to using only the bright white Light theme appearance, which is what we’re switching back to in this particular tutorial.

This article is obviously directed at iPad and iPhone, but you can also change to Light mode theme on Mac, as well as enable the Dark Mode theme on the Mac too if you wish.

That’s the basic method outlined above, but not by any means the only way to switch between light and dark mode.

Dark mode can also be toggled on and off from control center by long pressing on the brightness slider and then tapping on the light/dark mode toggle button to the left of the night shift and true tone buttons.

Alternatively, the control center>customize control center section in settings also offers the option to add an upfront light/dark mode toggle button in control center to easily switch between light and dark mode.

If someone is not seeing the Dark/Light mode toggle, and seeing the “Off/On till sunrise” option in the control centre. Simply, head to the “Display & Brightness” setting and turn off the “Automatic” option.
