How to Enter & Exit Apple Watch Power Reserve Mode

Jan 21, 2017 - 4 Comments

Apple Watch Power Reserve mode Though Apple Watch battery lasts a reasonably long amount of time, having a powered off or dead battery Apple Watch on the wrist is not particularly useful. One helpful tip when you approach the lower bounds of battery remaining is to switch into Power Reserve Mode on Apple Watch. Power Reserve Mode turns the Apple Watch screen into just a watch, allowing you to at least tell the time when the battery gets quite low.

With Power Reserve Mode enabled, Apple Watch will cease all functions except a limited onscreen clock display. While you can enter Power Reserve at any time, this is not something you’d probably use for fun since it disables basically all features of Apple Watch like fitness tracking and heart rate monitoring, messaging, notifications, etc. With that said, it’s an incredibly effective way to continue to use the Apple Watch as a time-telling device in situations when it would otherwise run out of battery.

This can be a nice messaging feature in iOS and iPadOS, but it has obvious privacy implications and can become problematic in other situations. Fortunately the latest versions of iOS and ipadOS offer more granular controls and allow you to enable Read Receipts for individual contacts on a person by person basis, while still turning off all Read Receipts in Messages for iOS for everyone else. A Better Way to Access the Camera from iPhone Lock Screen in iOS 10

Jan 15, 2017 - 13 Comments

iPhone camera accessed by lock screen

Ever since Apple redesigned the iOS lock screen to remove swipe-to-unlock and require users to press the Home button instead, some iPhone users have discovered that accessing the Camera from the lock screen might be a challenge. The potentially difficult scenario is this; if you press the Home button to show the locked display which you would then swipe to access the iPhone Camera from, pressing the Home button also unlocks the iPhone and skips the lock screen with the camera access. I recently ran into someone who was convinced this set of actions meant their iPhone lock screen camera wasn’t working or no longer existed, so the behavior can lead to some degree of confusion as well.

Fortunately there’s a better way to access the iPhone camera from the lock screen in iOS 10 and newer, and it doesn’t involve using the Home button at all.

How to Kill a Process by Name Instead of PID via Command Line

Jan 12, 2017 - 1 Comment

How to kill a process by name

Command line users rely on the ‘kill’ command to terminate a process as defined by the appropriate process identifier (PID). While there’s nothing wrong with targeting processes by their PID, another approach which is often easier is to target a process by name, rather than its unique identifier.

There are a few ways to kill a process by process name, we’ll review two primary methods using killall and pkill. These will work the same in Mac OS / X and linux, and they can be used to target GUI apps and processes as well as those running in the background or exclusively at the command line. Either command can be prefixed with sudo to terminate root level tasks or those owned by another user.

How to Manually Refresh Touch Bar on MacBook Pro

Jan 11, 2017 - 58 Comments

Refresh the Touch Bar on Mac

The Touch Bar on MacBook Pro changes dynamically depending on what application is open and what action is going on within Mac OS. Or at least, that’s what’s supposed to happen. Rarely, the Touch Bar stops working, will get stuck and become unresponsive, maybe even display an erroneous button, or show a blank button that doesn’t do anything. Typically the Touch Bar gets itself back in working order once the troubled application in question becomes responsive, exited, or the app is force quit, but sometimes you may need to manually force the Touch Bar to refresh and reload.

We’ll show you how to relaunch Touch Bar on a Mac, as well as how to target just the Control Strip portion of Touch Bar to force that to refresh.
