flip-clock-screensaver

Looking around for a clock screensaver I stumbled across Fliqlo, which is a simple and free flip clock screensaver that mimics the appearance of those retro flip clocks that existed in the time of dinosaurs.

The Fliqlo flip clock screen saver is visually pleasing and it’s available for Mac users as well as offerin versions for Windows and even iOS.

Prevent Annoying IM Text Styling with iChat

Feb 14, 2011 - 2 Comments

annoying-instant-message-text

We all have that person (or ten) on our buddy lists that insist on having their IM text formatted in stupendously obnoxious ways. Maybe it’s just using tiny font sizes, but sometimes it’s a full fledged assault on your eyes with bright pink size 26 Comic Sans font clashing against a neon yellow background in a way that makes your eyes want to bleed. The culprit of this is often Windows IM clients and their accompanying themes, but given how easy it is to customize the fonts of nearly any messaging client there’s no single source to blame.

If you’re like me, you hate this stuff, so what should you do? Set iChat to automatically reformat all incoming instant messages! You can set all messages to be a uniform font, size, color, and background, guaranteeing that you’ll be able to keep a simple and easy to read instant message conversation despite whatever disaster is lurking on the other users UI end.

Here’s how to do this:

iPhone Mini: Half Size, Edge-to-Edge Screen, Wireless Syncing, Free With Contract?

Feb 13, 2011 - 6 Comments

iphone-mini-rumors

Rumors of a smaller iPhone continue to heat up, and where there’s smoke, there tends to be fire. The Wall Street Journal is now confirming Bloomberg’s report of an iPhone Mini, and they’re also revealing some new details about the device, including it’s codename, N97.

iPhone Mini: Lighter, Half-Size, Edge-to-Edge Screen, No Home Button?

According to WSJ, the new smaller iPhone is intended to be sold alongside the existing iPhone lineup, but it would be about half the size of the current iPhone 4 model. Citing an individual who saw a prototype, the iPhone Mini is “significantly lighter than iPhone 4” and includes an edge-to-edge screen that is entirely touch sensitive, indicating that the home button may be a thing of the past. The smaller iPhone will also include a virtual keyboard and voice based navigation, which would likely just be features of a future iOS version.

Free With Contract?

Their source also says that the smaller iPhone will be available at about half the price of existing iPhones, which would allow cellular carriers to fully subsidize the upfront cost to the consumer. This would place the new smaller iPhone in direct competition to rival smartphones that are sold deeply discounted or included free with a service contract.

Wireless Syncing via New Free MobileMe

The same WSJ report also indicates that the existing iPhone 4 and future iPhone models will have wireless syncing capabilities, thanks to an overhaul of Apple’s MobileMe service. This would allow users to access their entires iTunes libraries from anywhere via the cloud, rather than having to physically sync the iPhone to a computer to transfer the files. In addition to wireless syncing, the new MobileMe would also serve as a digital locker for multimedia, including photos, movies, and video. This would be offered as a free service.

Summer 2011 Launch… Maybe
Both the new line of iPhones and the new MobileMe service are expected to launch this summer, but those plans could change, according to the WSJ’s source.

A summer release could put the devices alongside the presumed launch date of iPhone 5, which is assumed to be released at WWDC 2011.

Of course all of this is just a rumor, but it’s following a similar pattern to the Verizon iPhone rumors, with Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal both confirming the devices independently through sources long before the public release. We’ll keep you updated on the iPhone Mini as we hear more.

Change the default event length in iCal

Feb 13, 2011 - 5 Comments

default-ical-event-length

iCal automatically assumes that a new event will be an hour long, but you can manually adjust that into shorter minute intervals by using the defaults write command.

Here is the syntax to enter into the Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.iCal "Default duration in minutes for new event" 15

You can set the 15 at the end to any other number of minutes you want, then just quit iCal and relaunch it for changes to take effect.

This tip is from CmdComma, although if you copy/paste it from their site the command doesn’t execute properly due to the improper use of quotation marks.

If you’ve forgotten what defaults write commands you’ve used recently, check out this tip to query your command history.

NES Emulator for Mac: Nestopia

Feb 12, 2011 - 16 Comments

nes-emulator-mac

Playing NES games on your Mac might be considered nerdy or retro, but it’s also just plain fun. I finally found a decent NES emulator for Mac that’s free, and more importantly, it’s stable.

It’s called Nestopia, (get it, NEStopia?), and it has all the features you’ve come to expect from a good emulator: stability, freeze states, customizable keyboard controls, adjustable frame rates, and various display tweaks that can even emulate the funky NTSC connection.

Playing games is easy, either select them from the file browser in Nestopia, or you can drag them into the app, or once the filetype is associated (.nes ROM), just double click on a ROM file to play it.

iPhone Mini? Apple Working on Smaller & Cheaper iPhone

Feb 10, 2011 - 6 Comments

iphone-mini

Could an iPhone Mini debut this year? According to Bloomberg, Apple is set to unveil a smaller iPhone model in the middle of this year, which is around the same time the iPhone 5 release date and WWDC 2011 conference is expected.

iPhone Mini: iPhone 4 Components, 1/3 Smaller, $200

Citing a source who has seen a prototype, the smaller version of the iPhone that we’ll loosely call iPhone Mini will be cheaper and start at $200 without requiring a service contract. The device is said to feature components from the existing iPhone 4, but be about 1/3 smaller than existing models. Bloomberg’s source cautions that “the introduction may be delayed or scrapped” and that not many Apple employees know of the project.

iPhone Mini & iPhone 5: Dual-Mode with Universal SIM?

Possibly related, Bloomberg also says that Apple is working on dual-mode iPhones, which would allow a single device to work on both GSM and CDMA networks, in addition to a Universal SIM card that would allow iPhone users to jump between different GSM networks without switching sim cards. A Universal SIM may signify that iPhones carrying such a chip would be carrier agnostic, which would render the iPhone carrier unlock hacks irrelevant.

Bloomberg and iPhone Rumors
Earlier this year Bloomberg said that the upcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 2 models would become digital wallets through a built-in NFC chip.

Bloomberg should generally be considered a fairly reliable source of Apple rumors. Last year their sources accurately predicted the Verizon iPhone announcement would be in January 2011.

Who needs iPad 2 rumors when there is iPad 3 to talk about?

Feb 10, 2011 - 5 Comments

ipad-3-rumors-in-a-nutshell The iPad 2 might be in production but it hasn’t even been announced yet. Regardless, that’s not stopping the hungry Apple rumor mill from talking about the model to be released after that… iPad 3.

Talk of iPad 3 started when John Gruber of DaringFireball made a passing reference to the future device, which was quickly picked up by AlleyInsider and TechCrunch who cited that as a source for the products release schedule.

In return, DaringFireball wrote a lengthy post on the matter, part of which is him saying that some take his guesswork a little too seriously:

Now when I make actual guesses, some people (not unreasonably) think I’m being coy and actually releasing information that I know. Henceforth, when I say I’m guessing, I’m really guessing.

In other words, Gruber is not channeling Steve Jobs and Apple’s super secret release schedule from a crystal ball, although that is amusing imagery to consider.

Angry Birds Walkthroughs

angry-birds-walkthrough

I’m an Angry Birds addict, I admit it. I played it a bunch on my iPhone, and then once it came to the Mac, I found myself playing it even more. But even a frequent player like myself can get stuck on some of the more challenging levels of Angry Birds, and times like that require a level guide to help you through the rough patches.

These video walkthroughs are brought to you by Rovio, the creator of AngryBirds. They cover all levels of Angry Birds regardless of platform, so whether you’re playing on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, or PC, these will all apply to you:

iPad 2 in Production: Camera, Faster CPU & GPU, More RAM, Thinner & Lighter

Feb 9, 2011 - 7 Comments

ipad 2 rendering

The next generation iPad is currently in production, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Citing sources familiar with manufacturing the device, WSJ claims that iPad 2 will include a camera, a faster processor and graphics chip, more memory, and be thinner and lighter than the existing model. Their sources also say that the new iPad will be available on both the Verizon and AT&T networks.

iPad 2: Similar Screen Resolution as iPad?
The WSJ’s sources also specify that iPad 2’s display will not have a significantly improved screen resolution, instead it will feature a resolution “similar” to the existing iPad’s 1024×768 display. The language here is worth noting, because a “similar” display is not necessarily the same, and could indicate a slightly improved screen resolution.

Many users have been hoping for an iPhone 4 style retina display on the next iPad, but this wasn’t possible due to “trouble improving the display technology, in part because of the iPad screen’s larger size compared with the iPhone.”

Reality & the Rumors
If you’ve been following the iPad 2 rumors, you’ll notice that the WSJ claims are right in line with what the rumormill has been expecting. Noticeably absent are some of the more wild claims like dual HD cameras, NFC digital wallet chips, and a micro-USB or HDMI port.

Naming Conventions: iPad vs iPad 2 vs iPad 2G vs iPad 519491289184
While most of the features sound like they’re well established and set in stone, the devices name is the last big mystery. What is Apple going to call the next generation iPad? Will they keep the name simply as iPad like they do when they update their Mac lineups? Will they add a generation number like the iPhone and iPod touch? Does iPad 2 sound too boring?

Set “apple-touch-icon.png” to Customize a Websites iPhone Bookmark FavIcon

Feb 9, 2011 - 9 Comments

custom-bookmark-homescreen-icon

If you have a website of your own or are developing one for someone else, you should customize the saved bookmark icon that appears on a users iOS home screen. In the screenshot above you’ll see the custom OSXDaily favicon sitting on the screen of an iPhone.

Setting the Apple Touch Icon is a good idea because by default iOS will just save a small thumbnail of the site. The small thumbnails are often hard to identify and generally don’t look that great, so let’s set your own favicon image instead.

Transfer contacts from old phone to new Verizon iPhone with VZ Contact Transfer

Feb 8, 2011 - 2 Comments

verizon-iphone-contacts-transfer

Are you an existing Verizon customer and looking to get an iPhone? If so, don’t miss the Verizon Contact Transfer app that is freely available on the iTunes App Store, it will pull your contacts from your old phone via Verizon’s Backup Assistant service and transfer them onto your new VZ iPhone. The app looks extremely easy to use, just backup your old phone to their cloud, then put your phone number into the Contact Transfer app to pull all contacts phone numbers and email addresses to your new iPhone.

Transferring contact information from an old phone to a new one can be a huge inconvenience, so it’s nice to see that Verizon has an easy service to handle this for you. Considering the pre-order sellouts and pent up demand and for the Verizon iPhone, I imagine this app will get a ton of use.

You can download VZ Contact Transfer from the App Store (direct link).

Two Killer Upgrade Deals for MacBook Pro: Kingston 128GB SSD for $139 and 8GB RAM Upgrade for $79

Feb 8, 2011 - 5 Comments

kingston-128gb-ssd-deal

If you’re looking for some good deals to upgrade your MacBook Pro, Buy.com is offering two killer upgrades at great prices:

First up is the Kingston 128GB SSD V Series 2.5″ Hard Drive upgrade for $139.95 after a $75 mail in rebate. It’s actually part of a “notebook bundle” meaning it comes with an external drive caddy and USB cable to turn your existing 2.5″ internal hard drive into a portable external drive.

If you get the 128GB SSD drive, don’t forget the $75 mail in rebate (PDF). The SSD rebate offer and price are valid until 2/14/2011.

kingston-8gb-ram-upgrade

Next up is a Kingston Apple 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM Upgrade, you’ll want to double-check that your machine handles the upgrade but it should be compatible with most new MacBook Pro’s, iMac, Mac Mini, and MacBook models.

I used the same Kingston 8GB Ram Upgrade for my MacBook Pro and I’m thrilled with the results. If you’re a power user I would highly recommend 8GB of RAM, but it’s easy to check if your Mac needs a memory upgrade.
