Use your iPhone in landscape mode turning it into a mini-iPad

Dec 7, 2010 - 5 Comments

use iphone landscape mode

You can use your iPhone in landscape mode thanks to a third party tool that is available on the Cydia store. The app is called SBRotator, costs $1.99 and requires a jailbreak to install. Once activated, it will adjust the iOS icons to fit into the horizontal iPad-style layout by adding an additional row of icons, or you can set it to scale the icons to size automatically. You can also have it hide the icon names like in the image above.

What I think is most interesting about SBRotator is just how much it makes the iPhone (or iPod touch) look and behave like a miniature iPad. Once the iPhone has been placed into landscape mode, it really starts to look more like a tiny tablet than a phone.

Like I said, the app requires a jailbreak to work because it’s installed through Cydia. You can download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 if you need it, but be aware that newer iOS devices require a tethered jailbreak at this point.

Jailbreak or not, this is definitely a cool app. Thanks to MacStories for finding it a few days ago (screenshot is from there too).

Command Line MP3 Player in Mac OS X

Dec 7, 2010 - 9 Comments

terminal You don’t need to use iTunes to play music on your Mac, particularly if you just want to play an audio document. Mac OS X comes with an included command line audio player that you can use to play most audio files with.

In this example we’re going to use an MP3 file as the audio, but you can also play AIFF, WAV, m4a, and many more audio formats through afplay or open commands.

Buy a White iPhone 4 right now… in China

Dec 7, 2010 - 10 Comments

white iphone 4 for sale in china

If you want to get your hands on an white iPhone 4 right now, you can actually walk right into a market and buy one… if you’re in China that is. Much to Apple’s displeasure, the white iPhone 4 is openly for sale on various Chinese websites, and it’s widely available at popular electronics markets in Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Shenzen. Exactly how these iPhones were obtained for resale is sort of a mystery, but one thing you can be sure of is that the phones are not sanctioned for sale by Apple.

You’ll find that the white iPhone 4’s come in original Apple packaging, which suggests that a substantial amount of the white models were created and ready for shipment before being canceled at the last minute. I am guessing that it is these limited production models that are popping up in the Chinese grey markets.

Mac App Store to Launch December 13?

Dec 6, 2010 - 2 Comments

mac app store Last week I posted that the release date of the Mac App Store was imminent, based on Mac OS X 10.6.6 becoming GM and including Mac App Store support. Today there are further claims to support the idea of an early Mac App Store release, although it should be noted that these are unsubstantiated rumors.

According to AppleInsider, a source informed another Apple site, AppleTell, that Steve Jobs is pushing for an early launch date for the Mac App Store. The claim states that Steve Jobs originally wanted a December 6 release, but that has apparently been pushed to Monday, December 13. The push to launch the Mac App Store early is apparently in an effort to catch some of the holiday shopping buzz, and gift certificates to the store would be made available in a similar manner to the iTunes Store. There is no word yet on if gift cards from the iTunes Store would be compatible with the Mac App Store and vice versa, but we hope they will be able to mingle.

The Mac App Store was originally announced during the Mac OS X 10.7 preview, but Steve Jobs quickly pointed out that the release of the app store would be coming “within 90 days” to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

On a somewhat related note, I just realized that the Mac App Store icon looks to be following the lead of the controversial iTunes 10 icon, with it’s HAL-esque glowing blue orb design. I wonder if there will be a backlash against this icon too?

Cause an iOS icon calamity with Graviboard

Dec 6, 2010 - 2 Comments

Graviboard is a hysterical app that is available from the Cydia App Store that causes your iOS icons to become gravity and touch sensitive. Tilt the iPad and watch as your iOS desktop icons tumble and fall in the direction that your iPad is pointing. Grab an icon and toss it into others to cause a virtual trainwreck as the icons collide and scatter, bouncing off one another in a calamitous icon crash.

Is it useful? Nah, of course not, but not every app needs to be useful to be fun. Graviboard works on the iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone, and can be bought for $2.99 from the Cydia Store, and yes, that means you have to jailbreak your iOS device in order to access Cydia.

Watch the video, it’s pretty amusing and by using the same song in the iPad commercial you get a nice parody effect which is good for some laughs too. This would make a fantastic app to prank someone with,

A hat tip to MacStories for tracking this down.

Change the iPhone Carrier Name

Dec 5, 2010 - 3 Comments

change iphone carrier name You can change the carrier name on your iPhone using a free tool called “Fake Operator” that is available through the Cydia store. Installing the tool requires a jailbreak, and then the carrier name is adjusted through the Settings app.

If you want the app, after you have jailbroken your phone (you can download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 if you need the latest jb app), just search the Cydia store for “Fake Operator” and install it.

Adjusting the cell operator name is a fun way to customize your iPhone, and many people will set it to their own name or whatever else. This and similar apps are the primary method of creating fake Verizon iPhone pictures that have become somewhat popular around the web (an example of an alleged Verizon iPhone with the carrier name set), as you can see in the image below:

fake iphone carrier name

Because it is so easy to change the iPhone carrier name, don’t take these pictures as any particular evidence of an iPhone moving onto a new network.

Eject a Disk on a Mac

Dec 5, 2010 - 1 Comment

disk eject key There are a few ways to properly eject a disk on a Mac, the first and perhaps the easiest method is to use the Disk Eject Key which is located in the upper right hand corner of a Mac keyboard (it looks like the image to the right). The disc eject key applies to all Macs with built-in disk drives and all Apple Wireless keyboards, but of course not all Macs these days do have SuperDrives, and these newer machines will want to use a different ejection method. If the Mac does not have a disc eject key, then you can use one of the following tips to eject the disk (or disc) from the Mac instead.

We’ll show you three additional options to eject a disk, drive, disc, or volume work from any Mac, and with any disk or drive type, whether it’s a DVD, CD, network volume, disk image, external USB hard drive, or any other attached storage device.

Mac Setups: Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed’s Mac Office

Dec 5, 2010 - 38 Comments

prince khaled mac setup

Ever wonder what type of Mac setup a Prince would have? This is the office of Prince Khaled bin Alwaweed of the Saudi Royal Family, and if I had to guess I would say it fits pretty closely to what most Mac users dream setups would be.

This is full of awesome equipment: Dual Apple Cinema Displays are hooked up to a Mac Pro under the desk, those screens sit next to a 27″ iMac, and then there’s a MacBook Pro, along with a new MacBook Air 13″ and MacBook Air 11″ and a couple Apple keyboards, a magic trackpad, an iPhone 4, and a new iPod Nano.

Hanging above the setup is what looks like a CAD GXL2200 Cardioid Condenser Microphone with a shock frame.

This whole setup is fit for a Prince indeed!

Other than having a sweet Mac setup, it looks like another perk to being a Prince is that you can get a white iPhone 4 right now:

iPhone 4 Sale: Buy an iPhone 4 for as cheap as $25 from Radio Shack

Dec 4, 2010 - 93 Comments

iphone 4 sale

Have you been waiting for an iPhone 4 sale? You can stop waiting, because Radio Shack is offering a killer deal on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS for the next week (Dec 4 to Dec 11). Not only are brand new iPhone’s on sale, but if you are an existing iPhone owner you can trade in your old phone and get an even bigger discount on the iPhone 4. Here is the sale pricing breakdown:

iPhone 4 Sale Pricing

The iPhone 4 is sold new at $50 off at Radio Shack, but you’ll get an even greater discount with an older iPhone model to trade in which brings the price way down:

  • iPhone 4 16GB: $149
  • iPhone 4 16GB after iPhone 3G trade-in: $75
  • iPhone 4 16GB after iPhone 3GS trade-in: $25
  • iPhone 4 32GB: $249
  • iPhone 4 32GB after iPhone 3G trade-in: $175
  • iPhone 4 32GB after iPhone 3GS trade-in: $125

That’s right, you can get a brand new iPhone 4 for as little as $25 if you have an iPhone 3GS to trade in for it. This is without a doubt the cheapest way you can get a brand new iPhone 4. The Radio Shack iPhone sale is active only from December 4 to December 11 and it is not available online, you must visit a Radio Shack retail store to get the sale prices. You’ll need to pay the standard activation fee (I think it’s $30 added to your first bill) and to sign a standard 2 year commitment with AT&T.

iPhone 3GS Sale Pricing

If you don’t want the fancier iPhone 4 or you’re juts looking for a cheaper iPhone, don’t ignore the iPhone 3GS because it’s also on sale:

  • iPhone 3GS 8GB: $49

The standard activation fee and AT&T contract applies and again this sale price is only active in the physical Radio Shack stores.

If you miss this Radio Shack sale or you don’t mind having a refurbished iPhone, check out AT&T’s refurb iPhone sale which includes the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G all at deep discounts especially for ones with ‘cosmetic blemishes’ which are usually case scratches.

Thanks to Engadget for the picture above.

iPad DFU Mode Instructions for iPads with Home Button

Dec 4, 2010 - 39 Comments

ipad dfu mode

If you need to place an iPad into DFU mode, you can do so with the instructions detailed on this page. These instructions will work to put any iPad model with a Home button into DFU mode.

DFU stands for Device Firmware Update, entering DFU Mode is how you adjust the firmware on your iPad or other iOS device. This can be a helpful trick for troubleshooting some complex issues when you need to perform a DFU restore on iPad, or if you want to downgrade or update the iPad firmware with IPSW firmware files.

Getting into DFU mode on an iPad is the same for all iPad models with a pressable Home button, including iPad, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and older iPad Pro, though it is different on Face ID equipped iPad Pro models. The DFU mode process for iPad is close to the same process as entering into iPhone DFU mode (or iPod touch for that matter) on devices that have a clickable Home button, but it’s different from later models that don’t have the Home button at all. Overall it’s pretty easy, just follow the instructions below to learn how to enter into DFU mode on iPad.

Activate Unlocked iPhone 3GS and 3G to Fix Ultrasn0w Battery Drain Issue

Dec 3, 2010 - 11 Comments

You can use a new tool to activate your unlocked iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G, which in turn resolves the battery drain issue that has occurred on some iPhones unlocked with ultrasn0w. You’ll need redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 6 which was released specifically for this purpose, this allows you to ‘hacktivate’ your iPhone 3GS/3G by installing a new Cydia tool called SAM.

Activate iPhone 3GS & 3G to Fix Battery Drain

You should be familiar with redsn0w jailbreaks and Cydia, the goal is to jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.2.1 on the iPhone 3GS & 3G and then install the SAM tool which enables you to activate the iPhone and relieve the battery drain problem.

  • Launch Cydia and add the following source: http://repo.bingner.com
  • Search for and install SAM and SAMPrefs to your iPhone from that repository
  • Now download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Mac or Windows
  • Launch redsn0w and proceed as usual, but be sure and click the checkbox next to “Deactivate”, this allows the newly installed SAM to function

redsn0w 0-9-6-b6 deactivate battery fix

  • After SAM installation and using redsn0w with deactivate, tap on “Settings” and then SAM, and then tap to “De-activate iPhone”
  • Now launch iTunes and let it activate your iPhone
  • If iTunes tells you “Invalid SIM” when you try to activate, you just need to manually select your carrier

The reason the battery was draining with ultrasn0w prior to this SAM tool is because the iPhone was constantly sending out activation attempts, thanks to SAM this no longer happens and you will get a large boost in battery life, plus you can re-enable push notifications (which some people disabled as a temporary solution to the problem).

Buy a 500 GB Portable Hard Drive for $49.99

Dec 3, 2010 - Leave a Comment

cheap western digital portable hard drive

If you’re looking for a great deal on a portable hard drive, here you are. Amazon is offering a Western Digital My Passport 500GB portable USB 2.0 powered hard drive for just $49.99 with free shipping, which is 58% off the retail price for the “Robot Design”, named so because of the funky robot case artwork.

This is Western Digitals smallest portable hard drive, measuring 4.3″ x 3.2″ x 0.6″ which is about an inch wider than an iPhone or iPod touch. This would be a great gift for the holidays or a solid addition to any portable computing setup.

Western Digital My Passport 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive for $49.99 with free shipping from Amazon

These portable hard drives are particularly cool because they are powered by your USB 2.0 port, which eliminates the need to plug the drive into an AC outlet (although an AC cable is offered for those with limited USB options).

Mac App Store Release Date Imminent? Mac OS X 10.6.6 GM Released, Offers Hints

Dec 3, 2010 - 3 Comments

mac os x 10-6-6-gm

It wasn’t long ago that 10.6.5 came out, but now Mac OS X 10.6.6 GM has been released to developers. So what’s the big deal? Well, the next Mac OS X update includes “developer support for fetching and renewing App Store receipts” suggesting that the release date of the Mac App Store is imminent.

Other notes on the new OS X build refer to changes to Bonjour, Spotlight, OpenGL (perhaps further improving gaming performance), and printing. The printing reference may refer to an expansion of AirPrint compatible printers beyond the twelve HP models that are currently supported to work with the iOS 4.2.1 wireless printing technology.

Apple originally announced that the Mac App Store would be out “within 90 days” of the October Mac OS X 10.7 announcement, but rumors have since gone both ways; some say that the Mac App Store will be released before years end and others suggest it will be pushed live in January 2011.

I would be really pleased to see the Mac App Store released before the end of 2010, and I think the chances are pretty good if the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update is pushed to the public in the next week or two. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Fine Tune Archive Behavior with the Secret Archives Preference Pane

Dec 3, 2010 - 2 Comments

archives preference pane

You can fine tune how Mac OS X handles archives with a secret preference pane. There’s quite a few features tucked away in the Archives preference pane, including the ability to delete the archive after it’s expanded, reveal the expanded items in the Finder, and of course the same features for compressing files too. These are great, but my favorite part about the hidden Archives preference pane is the ability to adjust where expanded files go, you can manually set a specific directory for all expanded files to go into automatically.

How to Access and Install the Hidden Archives Preference Pane

Enough talk about the features, let’s access and enable the secret preference pane:

  • From the Finder, hit Command+Shift+G to access the “Go to folder”
  • Type in /System/Library/CoreServices/
  • Locate the app “Archive Utility.app” and right-click, then click on “Show Package Contents”
  • Now open Contents > Resources
  • Double-click on ‘Archives.prefPane’ to add the Archives preference pane

Once the preference pane has been installed you can access it anytime through System Preferences as any other control panel is accessed. I’m not sure why this isn’t enabled by default, but it’s definitely handy and makes the built-in archive tool a lot more useful (now if only it could unrar files itself).
