iPhone 6 with 4.7″ Display to be Released in Fall, Says Reuters Report

iPhone 6 with a 4.7" display mocked up

Apple will launch an iPhone 6 with a 4.7″ display sometime this fall, according to a new report from
Reuters. Additionally, a separate iPhone 6 model with a larger 5.5″ display may be delayed due to production issues.

Citing unspecified sources, Reuters says that both iPhone 6 models will use a new touch technology that allows for thinner construction of the display panel, this could suggest a thinner overall design may be possible. The report also notes there are some “difficulties” in producing the larger 5.5″ screen, but that the 4.7″ iPhone model remains on track for an autumn launch.

Reuters tends to be a consistently reliable source of Apple rumors. A January report from the equally reliable and well sourced Wall Street Journal also indicated that Apple would launch two new iPhone models this year. The WSJ story also suggested the next iPhone models would feature larger displays at up to 5.5″.

iPhone 6 mockups with larger displays

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a larger screened iPhone, with the first mentions appearing last year from Bloomberg, which then stated the possibility of an iPhone with a 4.5″ screen. For a relative size comparison, the current iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, and iPhone 5C models have a 4″ display, while the iPhone 4S and prior models had a 3.5″ display.

The images appearing in this post are mockups, there are no reliable rumors yet as to what the iPhone 6 will actually look like.

There won’t be no iPhone with larger screen. Especially, with different screen proportions. Period. We’re talking about apple. There has been rumors about larger iPhone since it’s first hardware update.

  2. benji888 says:

I can see the 4.7″, and hope they make iPhone 6 in 4″ & 4.7″ screens, as I want the best hardware, but it MUST fit in my pocket! This is a PHONE for frakk’s sake! (I’d settle for 4.3″, if they can reformat it so it’s not bigger than my iPhone 5).

As far as 5.5″ size goes…I really hope Apple does NOT enter the “phablet” market, it is a trend that will not last, and I really don’t see it, as, this could potentially cut into iPad mini sales. These 5.5-6″ things are too big for a phone and too small for a tablet…can’t stand ’em!

I guess “WHY?” is my only question.

I’m not “glued to my iPhone 5” like some people. I barely use it. As it is, it’s “large” enough for what I do with it: mainly texting and phone calls. Making it bigger will only make it more cumbersome to carry around and LESS convenient to use.

I suppose the kinds of people who are surgically joined to their phones would enjoy having a larger screen, but any increase in size of screen that it possible isn’t going to make it THAT much more enjoyable or useful.

I mean, face it: if you’re watching entire movies and videos and such on a freaking phone, you aren’t really experiencing them the way their creators intended. So a slightly-larger screen is kinda pointless, really.

I wish Apple would go back to concentrating on making brilliant computers and operating systems.

Sadly, IMHO, Apple has dropped the ball in so many areas recently that I have lost all enthusiasm for their stuff. I used to look forward to each new product release/update, but now I don’t care anymore. I would just like the stuff that I already have to work properly. I am reluctant to give them anymore of my hard-earned money to only be disappointed and frustrated.

  5. @JP: correct. This site has a great rep. This kind of story is just crap.

Rise above the fray, author. Don’t report unfounded rumors.

    • Paul says:

We ignore 99% of Apple rumors because most are unfounded noise, never pan out to be true, and many are just crafted from someones imagination to get attention. On the other hand, when something is reported by a reputable well-connected news organization (Reuters, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Bloomberg, etc.) those rumors tend to prove true.

As always, we are very cautious about rumors and encourage everyone to be skeptical until Apple makes announcements. Even from a well sourced, well respected news organization, it’s still a rumor for a reason.

      :)

April Fools? I kid, I kid, but 2014 has been a joke so far. Here we are and it’s April, 1/3 of the year gone with nothing, not a peep from our favorite fruit company. Apple hasn’t done anything this year, no new products, no product updates, barely any rumor leaks, nothing to keep us jonesing for the new iMustHave, not even any news to follow. Sigh. If one thing is so obviously different post-Steve, it’s the lack of pacing at the new Apple, which used to be masterful at dominating tech press and building hype around what’s around the corner. Now, Tim Cook dishes out crickets.

The jokes on us. We are poking around with our shaved down finger tips tapping away on our little tiny screened iPhones while squinting to read a text message… meanwhile Android phones are at 5″ and 6″ already. How many are switching to a bigger ANDROID phone when their contract is up because, hey let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger! Is Apple too late to the big phone party? Here’s my prediction: I bet they’ll release the 4.7″ this year, then, another year later, September 2015, they’ll release the 5.5″ model. Wow, that’s innovation?

I guess all us poor stupid slobs just don’t understand how wonderful andtheft is. I guess its like this…..

The guy thats happy with his wife, even with her flaws, doesn’t troll bars telling the other women how wonderful he is.
Its the guy thats unhappy that goes to bars and tells women how bad their husbands are and they need to switch to him.

You won’t understand this but “we don’t care what you think”

    • John says:

Awwww! Poor little technobabie! Thanks for sharing. Have fun with your Android for your huge sausage fingers.

    • D9 says:

How is making a bigger screen innovative? “Big” has been around for a long time…I don’t think Android phone companies invented it! ;)

I will give you props on the post-Steve Apple dilemma. I’ve yet to see the innovation or the ability to pace it like Jobs did in his Apple 2.0 years. It’s unique to have that type of not just a creative mind but salesmanship, strong managing leadership, good instincts of talent….there’s a reason he was seen as a genius!
