Play Quake in a web browser

Remember Quake, the popular first person shooter from 1996? It was a very innovative game at the time, and a massive hit, that initially debuted for Windows, before arriving unofficially on the Mac and Linux, and eventually got an official Mac release too (which I could swear did not perform as smoothly as the unofficial client, alas).

Anyhoo, web browsers and computers are powerful enough now that Quake 1 can now be played in its entirety, including multiplayer component, right in your browser of choice (you can also even run entire MacOS System 7, System 8, and Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar entirely in a browser).

Yes, really, you can play Quake 1 single player, or QuakeWorld multiplayer online, right from your web browser. Neat huh? And since this is browser based it’ll work on just about anything with a modern web browser and a keyboard.

Hit the ESC key in game to access single player and multiplayer game modes.

The browser version of Quake works the same as desktop Quake from days of yesteryear, with the same classic keyboard and mouse controls, which in case you forgot, the basics are:

  • W – forward
  • S – backward
  • A – strafe left
  • D – strafe right
  • Spacebar – jump
  • Move mouse/trackpad to aim and point
  • Click to shoot
  • Esc – menu

You can escape your cursor at any time with the ESC key too, of course.

Cheers to @SiliconForested on X for the find.
