Silence Annoying Notification & Alert Sounds in iOS
Just about every iOS app wants to send notifications and alerts to your iPhone or iPad. Twitter, Skype, Game Center, Instagram, all these are great services that have one thing in common: their notification sounds can be annoying, and arrive in huge bursts.
Instead of muting an iPhone or iPad constantly, you can selectively silence notifications on a per-app basis within iOS Settings. Though not all Apple default apps give the option, but most third party apps do, and here’s how to silence them:
How to Silence Notification Sound Effects from Apps in iOS
- Open Settings and tap on “Notifications” (labeled as Notification Center in the latest iOS versions)
- Tap the app in question and scroll down to Sounds, swipe to OFF
- Repeat for other apps in the Notification Center preferences
Of course, you can also just completely turn off notifications for an app too, which mutes the sounds and alert dialogs too:
I prefer selectively silencing Notifications to disabling them completely, since they can be genuinely useful it just happens to be rare that you want to know someone @mentioned you at 3AM. Of course you can always just mute your device too.
Managing Notifications and Alerts is improved dramatically in the newer versions iOS, with the addition of a “Do Not Disturb” option and night-time silencing. Nonetheless, many of us still like to go and manually disable some of the more annoying alerts and notifications from apps we simply don’t care to receive alerts from.
Have sounds off in notification app but that app still makes notification sounds.
How do I turn off sound for ALL applications and not one at a time?
I need this because of the bug described here:

Notifications are okay as long as they don’t burst my eardrums. I just want to turn them down to reasonable level!
