When you connect an iPhone or iPad to a computer with iTunes and an iOS software update is available, you will be notified with a pop-up that tells you a new version of iOS is available and asks if you want to update to the new version of iOS system software. Additionally, if you click on the “Check for Update” button in iTunes when an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is connected, the same iOS software update process begins and the software will download and attempt to install.

If you have chosen to accept an iOS software update in iTunes that you immediately realize you do not want to actually install, you can stop the iOS update process in iTunes by intervening quickly on a Mac or Windows PC.

The Safari Reading List feature is nice and lets you save web pages in Safari for later reading, even if the iPhone or iPad goes offline. This is done by caching the web page into the Safari Reading List feature, which is then stored locally on the iOS device. If you use Safari Reading List often though you’ll likely find that Safari Reading List cache can take up quite a bit of local storage space on an iOS device, which can be felt on a device that is otherwise running out of available space. Thus, you may want to take the time to delete the cache from Safari Reading List on a iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

The Preview app on Mac opens PDF files and image documents, and also allows for the easiest way to search PDF files for contextual term matches on a Mac. Even better, Preview can search in PDF files for matches across multiple pages, and it actually highlights each match in bright yellow making it remarkably easy to quickly locate search matches within the PDF document.

Mac users who come from a unix background may appreciate knowing how to implement the equivalent to the Unix “tree” command in macOS and Mac OS X. There are actually a few different ways to show a folder tree in the Terminal of Mac OS X, we’ll cover an easy tree equivalent achieved through an alias, as well as how to install native ‘tree’ on a Mac just like what you see in Ubuntu or elsewhere in Linux.

This is obviously aimed at command line users, but if you spend more time in the Finder of the Mac you might appreciate listing files and folder contents recursively there, which can be similar but is obviously not displaying a directory tree at the Terminal.

Ever wished you could make a dialog alert pop-up on the Mac by way of the Terminal? Well it turns out that you can with the always useful osascript command, which allows execution of AppleScript from the Terminal. For those who spend a lot of time at the command line of MacOS, this can be a great little trick to notify you of when a specific task has completed, or even to be included as part of a script. This is sort of a visual approach to one of my favorite simple Terminal tricks which is to verbally announce when a command line task has completed.

Let’s review how advanced Mac users can trigger alert dialog boxes in the MacOS GUI from the command line. You can choose to specify a specification application to trigger the pop-up alert to appear within, or, perhaps better yet, trigger a alert dialog in whatever the foremost application in Mac OS X is.

Apple Watch includes a feature called Mark As Missing, which is similar to iCloud Lock for iPhones, and intended to be enabled if an Apple Watch is missing or misplaced. Once activated, an Apple Watch goes into an Activation Lock mode, which requires the associated Apple ID and password to be entered before the Watch can be paired and used again – even if the Apple Watch is erased. Enabling activation lock on Apple Watch also disables Apple Pay cards, so if you’ve setup the payment feature for the Apple Watch, you won’t need to worry about someone using it if you lose the device.
