iTunes 10.5

Apple has released iTunes 10.5 in preparation of iOS 5 and iCloud. The latest version is a major update that includes full iCloud support, in addition to the highly anticipated Wi-Fi syncing feature, which allows anyone to sync an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes wirelessly as long as they’re on the same wifi network.

iTunes 10.5 is required for installing and using iOS 5.

Download iTunes 10.5

There are several ways to get the latest version of iTunes:

  • Download iTunes 10.5 directly from Apple.com (Windows & Mac OS X)
  • Check Software Update in Mac OS X
  • Update directly within iTunes 10.4

If you choose to download through Apple, keep in mind that you don’t need to fill out an email address, and you can just click on the big blue “Download Now” button to get iTunes.

The release notes attached to Software Update are as follows:

What’s new in iTunes 10.5

• iTunes in the Cloud. iTunes now stores your music and TV purchases in iCloud and makes them available on your devices anywhere, any time, at no additional cost.

• Automatic Downloads. Purchase music from any device or computer and automatically download a copy to your Mac and iOS devices.

• Download Previous Purchases. Download your past music, TV, app, and book purchases again, at no additional cost. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer on the iTunes Store.

• Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5.

• Wi-Fi Syncing. Automatically sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes any time they’re both on the same Wi-Fi network.

Identical issue: iOS 5.1 + iTunes 10.6 + OS Lion = critical failure.

For me at the Importing Photos step on the iPhone 4S or my iPod. Whether wirelessly or connected, iTunes just crashes whenever it is syncing.

Unresolved by resetting and erasing all iPhone data or by reinstalling iTunes. No other online advice available. I don’t want to uninstall and lose all my data…so I get to pay $70 extra for AppleCare to fix their failed software release on my iMac. After a long hold for support…

Another customer’s satisfaction just took a nosedive.

I’m having the same problem….downloaded the update and now all I have on my phone is my photos, calenders and contacts. I can’t sync to iTunes to get my music or apps back….please help!!!

There may be a simple soluition… But I do not know much about IT. Can someone who does help me please…
My Mac won’t finish writing the files when installing new software (I was just trying to upgrade to iTunes 5.0), it gets to about 95% complete then just sits there for ages. I have been waiting over an hour for it to finish writing files (done this twice and happened both times). Anyone know what the problem could be???

Tried to upgrade to iOS 5. First time it failed and told me to reset which loses all the apps, music, etc. I am now trying to get apps and music restored and iTunes 10.5 is stuck on Step 2 of 6 ‘Backing up’. It has been at this state for 4 hours now. Any recommendations as to how to get the apps, music, books, etc restored. I am so leary to upgrade my iPad after this experience. I do love the Apple products but this is frustrating.

Never known anything like it. 10.5 update is hopeless. Won’t backup ipad on windows 7 or XP. Apple get your act together. Bring back Steve Job!

  8. Ron says:

People running Windows XP in particular are having problems with iTunes 10.5 distorting the playback of all MP3s (see the multiple posts in the Apple Support Communities, iTunes for Windows section).

Same MP3s played perfectly with iTunes 10.4.1 etc and still play fine with non-iTune players.

If revert to earlier version of iTunes, you apparently have to import all your MP3s again.

No response whatsoever from Apple to the posts or a fix to iTunes 10.5 for this preventable and highly frustrating problem.

Same here. Crashes and apps don’t work. I agree with Laura – it’s scary everytime an upgrade happens. None of my apps work and iOS5 was installed prior to upgrade. When will Apple jump in and fix this?

  10. […] Before getting started, download iOS 5 and update your hardware, keep the IPSW around, but also be sure to have updated to iTunes 10.5. […]

  11. Craig says:

iPhone and iPad both crashed on upgrade – iPhone backup/restore failed 3 times before it finally worked. I could recover the iPad but iTunes won’t let me resync my apps on the phone. Once the aps (or music / ringtontes / whatever) are highlighted, all I get is the “revert” button and never “apply”, which remains greyed out. Anyone got a clue how to force the sync so I can recover my apps / ringtones / music?

  12. […] syncing requires iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 or later, be sure you have both installed before attempting to enable syncing through wi-fi or else […]

  13. Laura says:

I have it :( I downloaded it before I did the upgrade!

  14. Laura says:

I also forgot to mention I can’t use any apps!!!

  15. Laura says:

I downloaded the new itunes, backed up my iphone4 and then did the upgrade last night. It crashed during back up so I lost an up to date version of my phone and it lost all my audio and notes and things? Luckily it got all my photos etc (which I did iphoto transfer before all this)

Am i right in saying if a backup had errors and i lost some data when i try to sync it will only still have what it last remembered from that failed and incorrect back up?

The big problem I hit during the upgrade is itunes crashed at step 4 (purchased) and i think thats why i lost mainly all my audio, but now I can’t even sync my iphone because it crashes itunes every time at step 4.
    Very frustrating.

This happens to me every time I do this, but because I only do this once every 3 months it makes the iphone bearable. I love Apple and it’s products but it has serious issues when it comes to this and i never have any trust in it. It scares me every time i need to do an update. The public will start purchasing other phones for this reason with the market now being so competitive.

Can anyone help me please on why my itunes is crashing at the same spot every time or how to fix it?

    Many thanks.

The link to Apple says iTunes 10.5 but I just downloaded it and got 10.5 beta; it opens with a message that it will expire in 86 hours!

Probably better to wait a few hours before downloading – I downloaded at 10:30 PDT.

    • Matt says:

It gave you the beta? That is very strange.

Try downloading from Software Update if all else fails, although I have successfully gotten the final build directly from the Apple link.

  23. Parakeet says:

You can download this and use it with iOS 5 GM IPSW and install iOS 5 right now without waiting until tomorrow if you’re super impatient like me!
