Mac Retro: Run Mac OS System 7 in Mac OS X
How would you like to run Mac OS System 7 in Mac OS X? Never thought about it? Well we hadn’t really either but thanks to an app called Mini vMac you can easily run old school retro releases of Mac OS System 7 right on modern versions of Mac OS and Mac OS X!
If you’re interested in running an operating system from the 1990s inside one of the most advanced OS’s available today, you’re in the right place. Basically you’ll need to download the Mini vMac app, and then using a Mac ROM (vMac.ROM) you can run or install old fashioned System software. Easy peasy for the tinkerers out there. If you’re not up the task, check out our screenshots below to see what you’re missing, or you can run classic Mac OS inside a web browser instead here if you just want to have a little fun and poke around without getting your hands too dirty.
Once you launch Mini vMac and have the ROM with OS available to it, you’ll stop seeing the little blinking disk icon (remember that?) and you’ll boot into Macintosh System software 7!
You can run System 7, System 7.5, System 7.6.1, and other old school Macintosh system software releases this way.
OK so this just might be at the top of the useless list, but the fact that it’s possible makes it cool. And honestly who doesn’t love retro computing? This is a blast from the past, enjoy!
