iPhone 4 Reception Problems: Dropped Bars & Calls if Antenna Touched?
iPhone 4 hasn’t been out long but there are already some complaints and problems regarding it’s reception. The above video shows the iPhone 4 reception degrade while held in a users hand in a pretty typical manner. The cause, apparently, is when the iPhone is held in such a way that a persons hand touches both sides of the case (aka, the antenna), causing the signal bars to drop, unable to make calls, and the phones overall reception goes out the door.
Update: there is an iPhone reception fix recommendation from Apple: hold the phone without crossing the antennas, or use a case.
The original incident was found on a video posted to MacRumors Forums, which was quickly picked up by Gizmodo, where more reports and user submitted videos came in of the iPhone 4’s reception dropping when held in the hand.
Of course this doesn’t effect all iPhone 4 owners, as a video here demonstrates the device working just fine when held in the exact same manner:
The latest iPhone isn’t really in enough peoples hands yet to arrive at any meaningful conclusion, but this story is gaining a lot of attention at the moment. We will keep you posted with any additional findings.

Got my iPhone 4 yesterday – just ran the same test on antenna and the reception is fine. No problems at all. Wonder if the phone above was damaged in transit.
I want to see how the same phone works with it’s bumper on it. In the same hands of the people who’s conductivity is apparently enough to ground or interrupt the antena.
