New iPad models and new Apple TV

Apple has updated the iPad Pro and base model iPad devices, and released an updated Apple TV 4k.

As expected, the new devices feature performance improvements and new features.

M2 iPad Pro

The new iPad Pro is basically the same as before but with a faster and more efficient M2 processor. The most notable new feature available for the new iPad Pro is an ability that allows the Apple Pencil to hover slightly over the screen to preview drawing/writing on the screen.

iPad Pro is available as an 11″ LCD and 12.9″ OLED screen sizes, and continues to be offered in Space Gray and Silver color options.

Pricing for iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 11″ model, and $1099 for the 12.9″ model. Devices can be ordered now, and will be come available on Wednesday October 26.

Users who are sensitive to PWM will likely appreciate the continued availability of a higher end LCD iPad Pro model.

iPad 10 Gets a Redesign

The new base model iPad, iPad 10, features a redesigned enclosure that matches the squared off industrial design of newer iPad Pro and iPad Air models.

iPad 10 features a 10.9″ LCD display, A14 CPU, ultra-wide 12MP front camera that is located in Landscape orientation, a 12MP rear camera with 4K video support, a USB-C port, two speaker audio, Touch ID in the power/side button, and support for 5G on cellular models.

The new iPad is available in pink, silver, blue, and yellow colors, and starts at $449, which is an $120 price increase from prior base model iPads.

iPad 10 also supports a new $249 Magic Keyboard Folio case, and, curiously, support for the Apple Pencil 1 via a dongle, rather than Apple Pencil 2 with magnetic charging.

The base model iPad 9 continues to be available as well for $329.

Apple TV 4K Updated

Additionally, Apple released a new Apple TV, which features a smaller and lighter enclosure.

With that $120 price increase I find the base iPad less compelling over finding a discounted iPad Air if you really still want an iPad. At least for myself buying an iPad over $400 for a casual device is not in the cards. I would have thought the 9th gen. iPad would have been worthy of a slight discount as well. At least you can find it elsewhere for under $300. When you drop the headphone jack, change the port to USB C and only support a 1st gen Pencil. That extra $120 seems much less value balanced then previous gen iPads.
